Doctors collaborate with electrical and computer engineers to create better techniques and tools for everything from diagnoses to surgical procedures. Electrical and computer engineers are needed to make these tools as informative, safe, and affordable as possible.

ECE-trained students will improve the tools of diagnosis to give doctors useful information, and to cut the cost for patients. ECE researchers have made MRI with clearer images and CT scanswith a lower dose of X-ray radiation, lasers that could monitor glucose levels without a needle, and sensors that can track glaucoma symptoms from inside your body. You can also help develop new tools like brain probes that give us previously unseen looks at how our bodies work.

This project created an algorithm to create high-quality CT scans from a much lower dose of radiation. CT scans require a high X-ray dose to create a quality image for doctors to examine a patient, but this algorithm greatly reduces that dose.

He left Southeast Florida to earn a BA in philosophy (magna cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame, an MS in mathematics and Ph.D. in education, both from Northwestern University.

Over the past ten years, he has collaborated with colleagues from Florida State University on two large-scale randomized-control-trials and a follow-up to the original RCT studying the impacts of a professional development program that is known as Cognitively Guided Instruction. Secada continues to study how the language features of mathematics may provide challenges and affordances to late-elementary and middle-school students who are learning mathematics and who range from English learners to fully proficient in English. A fluent speaker of and literate in Spanish, he is analyzing a series of videotapes where high-school algebra is taught bilingually in terms of teacher practices and language-based math-classroom participatory structures.

Ji Shen is working on technology-enhanced STEM learning environments, interdisciplinary and integrated learning, modeling-based instruction, and alternative assessments in STEM education. As a native Chinese speaker, he is also interested in issues related to international STEM education. Dr. Shen holds a doctorate in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis.

Nam Ju Kim has extensive experience adapting technology tools including robots, games, and AR VR to STEM education programs in both in-person and online learning environments and in analyzing educational big data through machine learning algorithms.

As a Learning Scientist, Dr. Kahn looks at broaden participation in interdisciplinary, technology-rich activities to support youth learning across community settings, including museums, libraries, and cultural-heritage sites. Dr. Kahn teaches courses on qualitative research methods, including video analysis theories of learning and the design of informal learning environments.

As the newest graduate-level certificate in the Swanson School of Engineering, this 15 credit program will provide an in-depth study of a specialized and critical industry sector. The curriculum focuses on the core physical metallurgy principles while simultaneously incorporating modern and emerging topics in the field. With on-campus evening classes offered, the Physical Metallurgy Certificate is excellent for working professionals and graduate students with a BS in Engineering alike.

The Nuclear Engineering program provides coursework for a graduate-level nuclear engineering education with study areas in nuclear operations and safety, nuclear science, and nuclear systems and policy. The focus on nuclear operations and safety not only fulfills a recognized educational need, but is also designed to take advantage of unique industrial resources in the Pittsburgh area. The nuclear science area provides courses necessary to support a graduate-level research program. Finally, the Nuclear Engineering program offers courses in nuclear systems and policy, for example, we have a courses on codes and standards for the nuclear industry and on nuclear plant management.
