The program of study leading to the degree of Master of Science, while emphasizing continued work in basic physics, permits many options in several applied physics specialties. We offer Applied Physics doctoral studies in theoretical and experimental plasma physics (fusion and space plasmas) solid state physics (semiconductor, surface, low-dimensional physics, molecular electronics) optical and laser physics (laser interactions with matter), and nuclear science (medical applications).

This is achieved through completion of courses, in the primary field as well as related areas. 45 units of completed course work in science and or engineering at Stanford are required for the M.S. degree. There is no financial assistance from the Department or the University for students enrolled only in the terminal M.S. program. We note that eligible students often obtain teaching assistant appointments through other departments.

The Applied Physics program combines a core physics curriculum with research and study in areas that also includes the application of physics to the broader scientific and engineering communities. The Ph.D. program in the graduate field of Applied Physics (AP) is a flexible, research-oriented doctoral program tailored to individual interests. Graduate students can engage in a wide range of cross-disciplinary research activities, bringing their expertise as an applied physicist to bear, often in a collaborative environment. Instead of a qualifying exam, students are expected take classes in a common core of physics subjects, being quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, and advanced laboratory techniques.

The program spans the Physical Science Division of the College of Literature Science and the Arts, the College of Engineering, Medical School Public Health Natural Resources and offers graduate studies leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Applied Physics.

The ChAMP program is designed to prepare M.S. and Ph.D. scientists for modern careers in the Physical Sciences and Engineering, where cross-disciplinary education with an emphasis on applications is in increasing demand. Designed to appeal to students with interests in Applied Physics, Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering, the program unifies physical and chemical approaches to the study of matter, through the applied science of modern materials. And follow a curriculum and training that is tailored to an inter-disciplinary skillset and to jump-start their graduate career.
