They need to understand venture capital markets, stages of financing, business cash-flow models, measuring early-stage financial performance, and prepare financially for a successful placement. In this course, students will examine the elements of a term sheet, learn value early-stage companies, discuss compensation issues, make presentations to angel investors and venture capital groups, and learn to manage the finances of a new venture.

Through lectures, case studies, and guest speakers, this course provides students with hands-on experience building and presenting a commercialization plan for an innovative new technology.

Though the capstone of the class is the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC), the curriculum is broadly designed to provide students with the necessary tools to evaluate early-stage investment opportunities. The Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate (TEC) is open to all UW Seattle graduate and PhD students from a variety of disciplines such as engineering, medicine, law, built environments, forestry, pharmacology, and public administration. The Certificate Program in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CPIE) is a unique opportunity for Pitt Business students who wish to explore the interface between innovation and entrepreneurship as an enhancement to their business major. The CPIE is designed to provide students with an exposure to entrepreneurship whether their goal is to start and build a successful business or drive innovation inside a traditional organization.

Students completing the CPIE will better understand business operations and framework, how small and private businesses differ from large corporations, and determine market potential for new products. The required experiential learning component will allow students a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in the process of innovation and entrepreneurship in a wide variety of settings from traditional organizations, to start-ups, to non-profits pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors.

The CPIE is designed as an enhancement to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree program, not as a detached curriculum. It builds upon the BSBA core curriculum and assumes that the student is earning a major in accounting, business information systems, finance, global management, human resources management, marketing, or chain management. Accordingly, enrollment is open only to students in the BSBA program offered by the College of Business Administration. Enrollment is also available to students pursuing a double degree through the College of Business Administration (BSBA) and either the Dietrich School of Arts Sciences (BS or BA) or the School of Information Sciences (BSIS).

A total of 15 credits are required to complete the CPIE. This includes both required and elective coursework focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. including: corporate (innovation and development inside the organization), traditional (business ownership), and social impact (social entrepreneurship). The program culminates in an experience-based learning component (EBL). Students can complete the EBL component by selecting an entrepreneurship project course, an entrepreneurship internship, or a global entrepreneurship experience. To earn the CPIE, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.25 (C+ average) across all courses in the program.

Students are also strongly encouraged to participate in related non-credit entrepreneurship immersion experiences such as competitions and student organizations.

It is possible for a student to progress their own intellectual property through the course sequence, though the courses may be taken in any sequence. Four courses are required for the certificate.

This part-time program features our signature EU Flex class format.

This is a graduate certificate on your terms. In addition, all lectures are recorded so you can customize your studies to your schedule and your priorities.

Students must complete four courses. Each course is eight weeks in length. The program can be completed in one year.

This course focuses on the comprehensive process of formulating a new business venture. It focuses on the methodology of transforming an idea into a business. Key topics covered include: self-assessment, entrepreneurial makeup, the startup process, customer discovery, customer validation, scaling a business idea, and building a company.

This course focuses on why and how marketing and sales is critical to any start-up and small business. A key component of the course is how marketing and sales must work together in order for a company to be successful. Key topics include identifying the market needs and target audiences, determining which offline and digital marketing channels reach the different audiences, and how marketing and sales move prospects through the sales funnel to become leads, buyers and repeat buyers. Data collection, reporting, analysis and tracking key metrics to test the effectiveness of marketing programs will also be closely examined. Many case studies will be discussed so students experience real world examples of how marketing and sales impacts a start-up venture. Students will then take all these learnings and start developing their own marketing and sales business plans.

The entrepreneur will develop a business plan for acquiring human, financial and other required resources, and will be responsible for its success or failure. Within the entrepreneurship ecosystem, we will consider government programs and services for entrepreneurs, not-for-profit resources, such as incubators and accelerators education, training and financing (loans, venture capital, and grants). The business plan will include all key components, including: an executive summary, company description, market analysis, competitive analysis, description of the leadership team and organization, operations, financial plan, products and services, marketing plan and sales strategy.
