This description of the Environmental Science Engineering PhD course expectations augments the school-wide PhD course requirements. Students should make themselves familiar with both.

ESE is broadly conceived, covering science and related engineering applications for the atmosphere, oceans, land, cryosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Areas of study include dynamics (weather, ocean circulation, physical climate, atmosphere-ocean interactions, glaciology, geomorphologic and hydrogeologic processes), chemistry (atmospheric composition, global and local pollution, aerosols, marine biogeochemistry), biology (atmosphere-biosphere interactions, microbial transformations in the environment), and engineering (water technology, geologic hazards).

Graduate programs in ESE are diverse and flexible, as needed for the wide range of subject matter, but nonetheless there are common elements shared by many students. Programs are built around introductory courses that apply principles of physics and chemistry to the atmosphere, oceans, surface and near-surface earth processes. Students build on a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computational science, and study both the fundamentals and research frontiers of atmospheric, oceanic, and land surface processes and dynamics.

Climate phenomena and global changes in atmospheric and ocean composition are a strong part of the curriculum, including advanced applications of statistics and large-scale data analysis, and including transient accelerated glacial processes, air and water pollution, the science of geologic hazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides), energy-related geoscience, and engineering applications are a growing component.

Students take 10 total courses.

Students take at least 8 disciplinary courses which do not include a 298r and with at most one 299r, at least 6 of which are at the 200 level (not including any 299r).

At least one course is chosen from EPS 200, EPS 202, and EPS 208.

Most students take two or of EPS 200, 202 and 208, and 9 to 10 disciplinary courses.

Students normally take two introductory graduate courses and two advanced courses in their areas, two applied mathematics courses, and two graduate level courses in engineering sciences, earth science, biology, physics, or other areas where technical breadth of preparation is needed. Many students participate in the Harvard Consortium on Energy and Environment to provide complementary interdisciplinary training and experience.

Since students have diverse backgrounds and a broad range of educational goals, they undertake mathematics at different levels. Generally students will take 2 courses in the mathematical sciences which include math, applied math, and statistics. Note that ordinarily a maximum of 2 100-level courses can be applied to a Ph.D. program of study.

Typical programs include at least one of the following courses.

Generally students must take at least one of the following courses. In most cases students take two of the following.

EPS 202 Mechanics in Earth and Environmental Science.

Sub-areas of ESE each have additional educational needs for foundation courses covering various aspects of physics, chemistry, engineering sciences or biology, such as fluid mechanics, spectroscopy, laser physics, ecosystem dynamics, etc.

Most programs will have courses outside of the students direct research area. A typical program will contain two courses which provide technical breadth. The following is a list of courses which will often satisfy the technical breadth requirement:.

This is list is by no means comprehensive. Courses at the graduate level in Physics and Chemistry (e.g. quantum mechanics, molecular structure, electronics) are commonly included.

Please note that many students studying Geophysical Fluid Dynamics take 1 or 2 MIT courses.

Note that, for Program Plans in Engineering Sciences, Physics 223 Electronics for Scientists is considered to be a 200-level SEAS-equivalent technical course.

The department offers two doctoral degrees in Earth and Environmental Engineering: the Eng.Sc.D. and the Ph.D.

The Eng.Sc.D. degree is administered by the Columbia Engineering Graduate Student Affairs. The Ph.D. degree is administered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The qualifying examinations and all other intellectual and performance requirements for these degrees are the same.

EEE doctoral candidates must already hold a master degree in a related engineering or science discipline. Therefore, students with a Bachelor degree can apply for the M.S. .Ph.D., in which they complete a M.S.-E.R.E. before pursuing either a Ph.D. or Eng.Sc.D. degree, without having to reapply.

The EEE doctoral program is by its very nature interdisciplinary as it seeks to bridge the divide between natural systems and engineered systems.

Experience in teaching (generally in Year 2). This may include supervising and assisting students in laboratory experiments, grading, and preparing lecture materials to support the teaching mission of the department.

Doctoral research may be conducted in any of the areas of current foci of research in the department.

Doctoral candidates are required to pass a qualifying examination. This examination is offered after 12 months (second Fall), the first Friday of the Fall semester.

Many graduates with an Environmental Engineering degree continue their education at the finest graduate schools around the world.

They pursue Master of Engineering (M. Eng.), Master of Science (M.S.), or Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in various related engineering disciplines, or they sometimes complement their engineering degrees with Master of Engineering Management, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Doctor of Law (LLD) degree.

Career opportunities for environmental engineering graduates cover the spectrum of private industry, public agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and educational institutions. Environmental engineers may work as designers, planners, operators of pollution control facilities and water systems, educators, consultants to private and public businesses, business owners, government regulatory agency officials, or even as elected officials.

In their careers, environmental engineers can engage in a wide range of activities: they can design systems to prevent, reduce, or repair environmental damage caused by human activities they work to contain, reduce, or prevent hazardous waste, air pollution, and contaminated streams and groundwater they design water treatment plants to deliver safe drinking water to municipal residents and also design pollution control systems for industries and cities to protect the environment and peoples from a range of possible emissions they help in the reconstruction of wetlands and estuaries to preserve the environment and to maintain habitat for fish and wildlife. As our societies develop a sustainability focus, environmental engineers should be ready to focus and lead those efforts.

The Sonny Astani Civil and Environmental Engineering is dedicated to educating professionals who will be responsible for creating a sustainable world by being planners, designers, constructors, and operators of the built and natural environment. Our graduates are expected to be leaders in the discussions and decisions sharing the public environmental and infrastructure policy.

Always be confident in yourself. PhD study is definitely not an easy route, and there are times when you can have doubt in yourself.

I also find the university itself another very important factor. The flexibility in course selection and abundance in various study and living resources at USC are especially attractive to me. Last but not least, the city where the university is located matters a lot as well, and Los Angeles is a good place to live in.

Prioritizing my mental health, particularly when transitioning to a new program and city during lockdown.

Wanting to go into academia in the future, this is an extremely valuable way for me to learn what goes into teaching a course, and to help me strengthen my skills as an educator.

Please describe a little your research and what excites you itMy PhD research so far can be summed up as a study of weird sources of emissions: tugboats and trees. In my first study, I measured emissions from tugboats of a cancer-causing aerosol called black carbon. I found that tugboats spend most of their operational time near shore and emit black carbon per fuel consumed than other similarly sized vessels. This is important information because these vessels are emitting close to where people live. These findings culminated in a paper I just recently published in the journal Atmospheric Environment. My current project investigates the air quality impacts of tree planting in urban areas using a climate-chemistry model. Many cities propose tree planting goals as a form of heat mitigation because trees provide shade and evaporative cooling. These emissions lead to the formation of air pollutants like particulate matter and ozone under the right atmospheric conditions. These projects are extremely policy relevant and improving air quality literally saves lives.
