The goal of PhD training in EHE is to prepare graduates to engage in scholarship and professional practice that creates new knowledge, use research to transform practice and improve the health of the environment and the public, and effectively communicate research findings to the public. The program requires didactic coursework followed by an average of four to five years of research towards a doctoral dissertation (also referred to as a thesis on official forms and committees).

Training is offered through a core curriculum that is required of all PhD students in the Department with the addition of track program-specific requirements and focused courses in specialized areas.

Students are expected to tailor their curricula, working with their advisers to create a comprehensive plan of study and research. PhD thesis must be based on original research, worthy of publication, and approved by the Department and a committee of thesis (dissertation) readers. PhD students must also be engaged in primary data collection as a component of their dissertation research or embedded in other research during their training here.

Our programs are offered in the Whiting School of Engineering, on the wood campus (WSE) and the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) East Balti campus. Students in all of our programs have the unique opportunity to take classes on both the wood and East Balti campuses in order to complete their degree requirements.

Students in the PhD in Environmental Health program select from one of four tracks:.

The Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health Program (ITEHP) is the only training program at Duke which fully prepares students from a variety of backgrounds and educational disciplines for participation as rigorously trained research scientists active in environmental health careers. Interdepartmental and multidisciplinary, a PhD degree is awarded by one of several participating departments, with the ITEHP certification granted by ITEHP upon graduation. Upon completion of doctoral studies, ITEHP graduates will have been trained in a wide range of cutting-edge research skills necessary to successfully navigate the merging of basic science with human an environmental health analysis, interpretation, and presentation of research results and ethical and responsible research conduct. Completion of this training at the doctoral level prepares graduates for careers in the complex interdisciplinary fields of exposure science, environmental toxicology, and environmental health and disease. Graduates pursue a variety of careers in academia, industry, government, and non-profits, including positions involved in research, risk assessment, consulting, and policy.

These research programs include studies focused on both human and ecological health, and interconnections between the two. The elucidation of mechanisms underlying toxicities and adverse health outcomes is central to many studies in ITEHP laboratories. Exposures of particular concern currently include nanomaterials, pesticides, metals and metalloids, aromatic hydrocarbons, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, tobacco smoke, and endocrine disruptors. How such exposures intersect with other factors such as diet, lifestyle, and socioeconomic variables to affect health are also of interest.

Application to the program can be made in two ways.

Students admitted directly into the program affiliate with a degree-granting department (including various PhD programs in the Nicholas School of the Environment, Pratt School of Engineering, or School of Medicine) depending upon their choice of research mentor, typically at the end of their first year. Students directly admitted to ITEHP are awarded a full fellowship (tuition, fees, and stipend), and these training grant fellowships are restricted to US Citizens or Permanent Residents only.

(NOTE: It is also possible for students to add the ITEHP certificate option after they matriculate.

There is no difference in the eventual degree granted through either mechanism both routes result in a PhD granted by a specific department, with certification in toxicology.

Students are offered admission to the program with fellowship support based on rank among all applicants. Students may be awarded a toxicology and environmental health training grant fellowship or may be accepted into the toxicology and environmental health program with support from departmental funds. For each entering year, approximately three full fellowships (tuition, fees, and stipend) are awarded to toxicology graduate school applicants.

Please note that toxicology and environmental health training grant fellowships are restricted to US citizens or permanent residents. Non-US citizens who are interested in the integrated toxicology and environmental health program will need to apply and request funding directly through a participating department.

The EH PhD program requires coursework in environmental health, epidemiology and biostatistics, organized as core requirements, track-specific requirements, and electives. Three tracks of study are defined within the environmental health doctoral program:.

The EH PhD program requires coursework in environmental health, epidemiology and biostatistics, organized as core requirements, track-specific requirements, and electives. The common curriculumconsists of six courses that are required of all PhD students in the EH program. Most full-time students will complete these courses during the first year of study. Together these courses provide students with a foundation in the science and methods of environmental health, including the translation of science into policy.

The emphasis in Environmental Epidemiology focuses on the design and conduct of studies of specific environmental exposures and of diseases with environmental causes, tracking diseases and hazards (surveillance), and the methodology used to assess patterns of environmentally related diseases. Classes are taught in close collaboration with the Epidemiology and include specialized instruction in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistical methods. This emphasis prepares students for research in various sectors as well as employment in public health departments and consulting.

The curriculum for students choosing to focus in environmental epidemiology comprises four courses, including three epidemiology courses and one biostatistics course.

The courses in the exposure assessment track provide hands-on teaching of the tools for assessing exposure to, and associated health risks of, environmental hazards found in air, water, soil, and other parts of the environment. Public health department practice, work with agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, research, consulting, and exposure assessment positions are all compatible with the training offered in this emphasis.

The courses in the toxicology track provide hands-on teaching of the tools for determining the risk to human health associated with exposure to environmental hazards found in air, water, soil, and other environmental media. There is an emphasis on examining the dose-response for environmental hazards and understanding biological mechanisms that lead to the associated health risks. Our graduates are well suited for working in public health and environmental health agencies, conducting academic research, and pursuing successful environmental consulting careers.

Students are encouraged to consider a minor from the other major training areas or from the following training areas: Biostatistics, Community Based Research, Environmental Infectious Diseases, Environmental Health Policy, Urban Ecology and Climate Change, Biogeosciences and Risk Assessment.

Our research rotation program allows students to become involved in research during their first year and is designed to assist students in the process of identifying a dissertation topic. Specifically, students participate in a research rotation during each of their first three semesters (fall, spring, summer).

Our PhD students participate in a doctoral seminar (every week), a doctoral proseminar (every two weeks), a journal club (monthly) and an annual research retreat, all of which represent key elements of our program.

The Gijs van Seventer Environmental Health Seminar provides trainees the opportunity to engage in an academic seminar addressing substantive topics in environmental health. Students are required to attend and give at least one presentation per year.

The Journal Club allows students to gain experience reviewing and critiquing scientific journal articles, stay abreast of the literature in the field, and become familiar with diverse topics across the field of environmental health.

After completing coursework, each trainee submits an application to the Doctoral Committee for approval to take qualifying exams (by the end of their fifth semester). The application includes identification of one major and two minor fields, a copy of their unofficial transcript, and a draft dissertation proposal. The qualifying exam includes both a written and an oral component.

Our program is committed to providing doctoral students with opportunities to develop their teaching skills. Each year, our department offers teaching assistant opportunities associated with several different classes (e.g. EH705, EH707, EH710, EH730, EH757, EH804, EH866, EH811). Students are required to serve as a teaching assistant in at least one class during their time in the program, though most choose to do so than once.

A T32 training grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (PI: McClean, $1.3 million), in combination with a training grant from the National Science Foundation (PIs: Levy, Templer, Hutyra), individual training awards, and individual research grants, provides the resources necessary to ensure that our PhD students receive full for the duration of their program.

Komal is interested in applying knowledge gained from research to help communities solve real-world public health problems. Past research projects include applying modelling methods developed for research to issues relevant to city local public health decision-making, examining exposure to PCBs from air and from consumption of seafood in an environmental justice community, reviewing regulations and monitoring of PCBs in air at contaminated waste sites, and assessing exposure to lead from backyard chicken egg consumption.

Paige is interested in using GIS and remote sensing to look at the public health co-benefits of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, such increased greenness and reducing air pollution.

Laura is interested in understanding how climate change mitigation efforts can also benefit overall public health, with the goal of supporting policies that promote equitable and healthy energy system transformations.

Lindsey research focuses on prenatal and environmental epidemiology and examines how climate change impacts the health of vulnerable populations.

Kate research interests include indoor air pollution and energy use modeling in buildings to understand the tradeoffs for air quality and health.

Alexa is a first-year doctoral student, currently interested in investigating exposures to per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and the health impacts of these chemicals.

Stephanie research interests in environmental epidemiology include the effects of air pollution, noise pollution, and the built environment on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health outcomes.

Beth is interested in how water resources and health are influenced by natural and built environments under the pressures of climate and land use change.

Leila is interested in applying environmental epidemiological research to evaluate the health impacts of climate action plans, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations.

Raquel research focuses on understanding the human health impacts of air pollution, vegetation, and other exposures in urban settings, and how the distribution of such exposures might exacerbate underlying social inequalities.

Daniel is currently investigating the relationships between aircraft noise exposure and adverse health effects such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease. He is broadly interested in the application of novel epidemiologic and statistical methods to environmental health research.

Current projects focus on the effect of polyfluoroalkyl substances on pediatric health outcomes.

Matt is interested in the climate and health co-benefits of sustainable transportation.

Samantha is a first year doctoral student studying environmental epidemiology.

James graduated in September 2016, with a specialization in toxicology and risk assessment. James became interested in learning to apply these skills to broader, public health-related fields and completed a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health at Boston University School of Public Health.

James used laboratory-based approaches to determine the mechanisms and consequences of nuclear receptor-mediated fat cell differentiation in response to environmental contaminant exposure. Specifically, James focused on the bone marrow compartment, a complex microenvironment in which perturbations have implications on bone health and structure, as well as on the developing immune system. He was working in collaboration with Dr. Tom Webster on developing predictive models of nuclear receptor activation for use in chemical mixture screening assays.

Rebecca Laws graduated in September 2015, with a specialization in environmental epidemiology and exposure assessment.

Hartman Student Paper Competition and sat on the Aviation Emissions Characterization Panel providing expertise on local air quality assessments at the Transportation.

Emma Preston graduated in September 2017, with a specialization in exposure assessment and environmental epidemiology. Barry Ryan at the Analytical Exposure Science and Environmental Health Laboratory at Emory University.

Stephanie graduated in May 2019, with a specialization in toxicology and epidemiology biostatistics.

Stephanie also learned from Dr. Stefano Monti and applied bioinformatic approaches to characterize the genetic and pathway perturbations of nuclear receptor-mediated fat cell differentiation and function upon exposures to environmental contaminants.

Stephanie has been awarded student research poster awards and Dr. Karen Wetterhahn Memoral Award from the NIEHS Superfund Research Program .

The majority of our graduates are interested in building independent research careers in the field of environmental health and therefore obtain post-doctoral training fellowships or other academic appointments at top research institutions. Some graduates instead decide to pursue careers as senior scientists at regulatory health agencies or as senior scientists at environmental consulting companies.
