Graduate Certificate Programs in Epidemiology

The timely detection, investigation, control, and prevention of outbreaks and major long-term public health problems require a well-trained and competent epidemiology workforce as a key component of a national public health infrastructure. Epidemiology is an integral component of public health practice. The discipline aims to provide the basis to prevent disease and to promote the health of populations through the study of the occurrence and distribution of health-related states or events, including the study of determinants influencing such states. Professional epidemiologic methods, defined as the application of epidemiologic methods to public health practice, entail the combination of analytical methods and applied epidemiology oriented to problem solving in public health. The principal areas of professional epidemiology include epidemiologic assessment of public health data, health situation and trend analyses, public health surveillance and health program impact assessment. These areas are closely linked to the essential public health function and services. This certificate program is intended to provide the concepts, methods and tools needed for the assessment of health situations and trends of population groups.

Upon completion of the core courses in this certificate program, individuals will have gained specialized knowledge and skills on the application of epidemiologic concepts and methods to public health problems, as follows:.

Understand the place of epidemiology in public health, specifically how epidemiology is used to identify causes of disease, identify populations at high risk for disease, develop preventative methods and evaluate public health strategies.

The certificate program is open to Bloomberg School students, with the exception of MAS students graduate students in other divisions of Johns Hopkins University and to non-students.

The certificate is designed for junior and mid-level public health professionals interested in expanding their knowledge of epidemiologic methods as related to public health issues and their ability to address public health problems. It is also designed for masters and doctoral students enrolled at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and in other university divisions, including the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. JHSPH MAS students are not eligible to until they have completed their primary degree program.

The certificate program can be completed entirely with a combination of and on-campus courses.

The certificate program review committee will review the applications and notify each applicant of their admissions decision.

All certificate program students must take all of the core required certificate courses for a letter grade elective courses may be taken for a letter grade or Pass Fail. All students must attain a GPA of 2.75 or higher to obtain a certificate.

Students must successfully complete the core courses, demonstrated by full attendance and participation in all course activities and assignments. The student should review the section of the website that addresses completion before completing certificate program requirements. The student transcript will not indicate that the certificate was earned until the Notification of Completion has been submitted, verified by the certificate program and processed by the Registrar.

The certificate program requires a minimum of 21 term credits comprised of required courses and core elective courses. The certificate curriculum consists of four required courses in epidemiologic methods, and at least two of three core elective courses. Certificate students may take additional elective courses focusing on application of epidemiologic methods to substantive areas, such as infectious diseases and biostatistics methods. Students should check the course catalog to confirm when courses are offered.

All students taking the certificate for academic credit are required to complete this free course during their first term of study.

REQUIRED ELECTIVE COURSES: Students must select at least two of the following elective courses to complete the certificate program with a total of 21 credits. Elective substitutions are possible, but require approval in advance from Dr. Carlos Castillo-Salgado.

Because Genetic Epidemiology is a multidisciplinary field, we expect applicants to come from a variety of backgrounds. However, most individuals who apply to this program are physician-scientists and other clinical investigators, particularly postdoctoral fellows and people with terminal degrees in other related disciplines who seek to gain expertise in Genetic Epidemiology. All prospective students must provide evidence of basic skills in genetics, mathematics and computer programming through course work and documented experience or by passing a proficiency exam.

The 19-credit-unit certificate program is designed to prepare students to work at the interface of Genetics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Computing. The Certificate in Genetic Epidemiology is earned after the successful completion (with a minimum of a B average) of seven core courses plus labs that are normally offered to master candidates in Biostatistics. To earn the certificate, the following courses may be taken over the course one or two consecutive years:.

Epidemiology certificate program is designed to supplement and build on the knowledge of working professionals who desire additional training in epidemiology. It will also cater to students who wish to further their knowledge of this field by immersing themselves in its study for one academic year in preparation for other graduate of professional degrees.

A full-time student will be able to complete the certificate program in two semesters, while a part-time student may finish within four semesters. Students will be admitted for the fall and spring semesters.

All applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School of Arts Sciences. Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a bachelor or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university where English is the primary language of instruction. All other non-native speakers must achieve at least a minimum score on either the TOEFL or IELTS test. Applicants should allow six to eight weeks from the test date for the reporting of scores to the institution.

As the practice of public health changes, so do the educational needs of public health practitioners, particularly in the area of field epidemiology. In recent years, in the U.S. and across the world, we have faced a variety of new man-made and natural threats, including new strains of existing diseases and the re-emergence of threats that were thought to be eradicated. At the same time that these threats have increased we continue to face a shortage of adequately trained epidemiologists in state and territorial health departments. The need to prepare the public health workforce to deal with these threats is crucial and requires innovative approaches to education and training that encompass the latest surveillance techniques and take full advantage of current technology.

To address this need and fill the gap in educational programs available to practitioners, the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health has developed the Online Certificate in Field Epidemiology program, which is specifically designed for working practitioners and emphasizes practical, applied skills. All courses have been specially designed and developed for delivery online. A connection to the internet is required.

The curriculum for the Online Certificate in Field Epidemiology includes four courses totaling 12 graduate credit hours. Students enroll in one course per term:.

Principles of Epidemiology for Public Health (EPID 600) This is an introductory epidemiology course that considers the meaning, scope, and applications of epidemiology to public health practice and the uses of vital statistics data in the scientific appraisal of community health.

Fundamentals of Public Health Surveillance (EPID 750) This courseprovides the conceptual foundations and practical skills for designing and implementing surveillance systems and for using surveillance data for the conduct and evaluation of public health programs and research.

Methods in Field Epidemiology (EPID 759) This course focuses on the epidemiological methods required to investigate urgent public health problems. The skills and tools needed to conduct outbreak investigations and communicate findings to the public are covered in this course.

Principles and Methods of Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology (EPID 758) This course encompasses the interaction between an infectious agent, host, and environment, modes and dynamics of transmission, the role of immunity in infectious disease epidemiology, and disease elimination strategies.

All courses for the certificate can be completed online in one year (four semesters).

Some of the Epidemiology courses cover quantitative subject matter and require a minimum level of math competency that should be obtained either through extensive experience or by having taken recent courses. Transcripts should include evidence of grades of B or better in math courses, covering both college algebra and calculus at a minimum.

Applications for the Field Epidemiology certificate for Summer 2023 start term opens August 3, 2022, to April 7, 2023.

The Certificate in Psychiatric Epidemiology 12-credit Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Epidemiology is the only certificate program of its type in the world. Graduates will join the vibrant international cohort of psychiatric epidemiologists around the world.

The CPE program, offered by the Epidemiology, Colleges of Public Health and Health Professions and Medicine, and the Psychiatry, College of Medicine, will train physicians, residents, and mental health professionals to address the critical mental health challenges of our time.

A CPE will allow graduates to answer the many unanswered questions, develop new methods, and play an important role in directing prevention and treatment policies for the mental health of our communities.

Infectious diseases continue to remain an important threat to public health. Recent outbreaks of Ebola, Zika, and other diseases vividly illustrate the need to be well prepared against infectious disease threats. As such, students who can demonstrate strong training in the area of infectious diseases are and will remain in demand at organizations such as local and state health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and many other institutions, both public and private, that deal with public health.

The Graduate Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology, offered and administrated through the Epidemiology and Biostatistics, provides UGA graduate students, who have a strong interest in infectious diseases at the human population level, a program of study and formal recognition in this area. By earning this certificate, students will be able to explicitly demonstrate the infectious disease-related training and skills that are of increasing importance in the field.

Have previously taken EPID 7010 and BIOS 7010 or equivalent knowledge (as determined by the Certificate Coordinator when student applies).

Students will need to complete a minimum of five 3-credit hour courses to earn a Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology.

Applying for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program is a two-step process:.

All applicants must complete the Certificate Program application form.

Apply to graduate in Athena. Candidates for completion of the certificate must apply to graduate using the graduation application available in Athena by the withdrawal deadline of the semester in which they intend to graduate.

Students will learn incorporate valid research findings into clinical decision-making. Courses examine research methods, study design, biostatistics, epidemiology, and clinical trials.

The Clinical Epidemiology Certificate program has provided me with an excellent foundation for evaluating critical public health issues as they pertain to clinical research.

You can complete the Clinical Epidemiology Certificate in two to three semesters, or you can plan a schedule for completing the courses over a two-year period (maximum timeframe). The late afternoon evening schedule makes it convenient to continue working or gain experience while earning your Clinical Epidemiology Certificate. Certificate courses may also be applied toward a degree at the Rutgers School of Public Health depending on the degree program and concentration. Certificate holders must apply and be admitted to the degree program.

Graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs of public health may transfer up to six (6) credits towards a certificate program if earned within the past seven years with a grade of B or better and are deemed appropriate by the respective Certificate Program Coordinator.

The Certificate in Emerging Infectious Disease Epidemiology is designed for a broad range of individuals, including graduate students, international public health professionals, laboratory professionals, physicians, nurses, veterinarians, and medical technologists who seek graduate-level training in emerging infectious diseases.

The graduate-level program requires 12 s.h. of graduate credit and provides basic information and training related to infectious diseases.

At this time applications are only being accepted from current University of Iowa degree seeking graduate students. Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

The Epidemiology program also houses the Biostatistics Core, which serves as a vital resource for statistical expertise and support around research and teaching, and Epi-Assist, a student group that provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of public health and emergency management. The Epidemiology program also coordinates closely with the Partnership for Healthy Communities, facilitating student engagement in research and projects to improve the health and well-being of Delaware communities.

The Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology is a 12-credit program intended to support individuals who seek additional training in epidemiologic methods and the applied skills needed to address a broad range of health problems. This certificate serves a need for education and preparation in epidemiology biostatistics skills within Delaware, across our region, and beyond.

The MPH program is designed to prepare students for a career in public health in either applied (e.g., local, state or federal public health agencies) or research settings. Students are provided with comprehensive training in both population health principles and epidemiological methods and biostatistics to ensure they are proficient in the skills needed to successfully enter the public health workforce.

The PhD program provides students with advanced training in epidemiological methods and prepares them for careers in research, teaching, and applied public health.
