Housed in the English and Comparative Literature, Film Studies is currently in the process of expanding at the graduate level. We now offer a Graduate Certificate in Film Studies, which is open to MA and PhD students. Those pursuing the certificate take one core course (ENGL 680 Film Theory or ENGL 881 Studies in Cinema), plus two electives from a cross-departmental range of options.

Our PhD students present their research in a graduate extension of the Triangle Film Salon, an annual series of lectures and colloquia. The Salon brings in internationally renowned speakers in film and media studies and gives our students the opportunity to interact with them.

This certificate is open to all graduate students enrolled at Bowling Green State University. Through this certificate program the student will explore the histories, theories, and practices of Performance Studies. The focus is on the relationship between text and practice performance as a reflection of society, a witnessing to an experience, or a challenge to social structures or ways of knowing emerging ideas of audience reception theory interdisciplinary connections with cultural studies, communication studies and U.S. global performance practices.

Curriculum: Core Sequence (9 credits): THFM 6630 Introduction to Performance Studies (3) THFM 6680 Performance Studies (3) THFM 6660 Directed Research in Portfolio Development to serve as a capstone experience.

Supplementary Elective Courses (9 credits): Electives for the Graduate Certificate Program in Performance Studies may be filled by courses in Theatre and Film, and or other departments and programs. Electives will be selected by the student subject to approval by the graduate coordinator of the Theatre and Film.

The Certificate in Film Studies enables students to study this important field in a rigorous systematic fashion. Film is the major art form and communication medium that transmits culture, influences society, and both reflects and shapes human conduct. Further film links diverse cultures through depiction of national societies and through language exposure. The Certificate will give recognition to a significant medium that generates innovative theoretical, historical, literary and creative methodologies. It will enhance interdisciplinary connections among Modern Languages, English, Sociology, Anthropology, Architecture, Visual Arts, History, Religious Studies and other departments.

Students will have a unique opportunity to access new films, film archives, film makers, internships and related benefits. This certificate will complement studies in other fields and enable students to obtain an intellectual background in the theories and methodologies of film culture.
