Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (AFS) Major and Minors. MS and PhD in Aquatic and Fisheries Science. UW Aquatic Sciences Open House is back on May 21. With access to a network of local, national and international leaders, we contribute influential research on topics ranging from organisms, populations, ecosystems, to human users of aquatic ecosystems.

Areas of concentration include fish ecology, fisheries management, population dynamics, aquaculture, fish physiology, and aquatic toxicology, and harmful algae. These areas are strongly supported by other programs on campus, including the Odum School of Ecology, the Georgia Sea Grant Program, the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, the U.S.G.S. Biological Resources Division, Georgia Cooperative Fisheries and Wildlife Unit and Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Students completing graduate degrees in Fisheries Science are prepared for employment in academia, federal and state agencies, and in the private sector. Fisheries Science can be pursued under the MNR, MS, and PhD degree programs.

Our graduate degree offerings include the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy, with emphases in aquaculture, aquatic ecology and fishery management. Our programs prepare students for productive careers in academia and the private and public sectors in aquaculture, aquatic resource management and ecology, and fisheries biology and management. Coursework may also be taken for credit at Dauphin Island Sea Lab or the Gulf Coast Research Lab. The doctoral program in fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic sciences emphasizes original scholarly research and includes significant advanced coursework.

Graduate students of the Fisheries and Wildlife value scholarship in all its forms discovery, integration, application, and teaching. We value understanding for its own sake, for the betterment of people, and for the conservation of the natural world. The Fisheries Science graduate program focuses on quantitative analyses of marine and freshwater fish populations, water quality, fish systematics, fish and invertebrate physiology, stream ecology, modeling of aquatic ecosystems, land use interactions, endangered species, and aquaculture. Aquaculture, conservation biology, fish genetics, ichthyology, limnology, parasites and diseases, physiology and ecology of marine and freshwater fishes, stream ecology, toxicology, water pollution biology.

The University of Idaho (UI) is taking the lead in American Indian graduate-level science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education by forming the Indigenous STEM Research and Graduate Education program, or ISTEM. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded University of Idaho nearly $750,000 to create a national network of institutions collaborating to increase the number of Native students entering and completing masters and doctoral programs in STEM fields. ISTEM is a pilot program with the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program at NSF. To recruit students, provide them an environment for success and help them complete the classes they need to graduate.
