The Certificate in Foreign Language Teaching provides certification in the theory and practice of second or foreign language teaching for student language teachers concurrently enrolled in graduate degree programs in foreign languages or related graduate programs at USC for graduates of such programs who are teaching languages for external candidates concurrently enrolled in similar programs in accredited colleges or universities for graduates of such programs who are teaching languages. The College has therefore decided to accept English language tests (as listed below), which meet Johns Hopkins University own entry requirements for admission to courses taught at degree level, provided the test certificate is valid and the scores achieved meet either Johns Hopkins University Standard level or Higher level requirements (please note that some courses require the Higher level). Students in language and literature departments (see list here) should enroll in the SLA Certificate, rather than the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP).

The Certificate in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is offered by the Center for Language Study (CLS), and is specifically designed for Yale graduate students in departments of language and literature to provide a comprehensive training program in second language acquisition and language teaching methodology. Students in language and literature departments (see list here) should enroll in the SLA Certificate, rather than the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP). The SLA Certificate provides a solid foundation in second language acquisition, language teaching methodology, and applied linguistics. At this time, post-docs, visiting scholars, and students in master’s degree or professional school programs are not eligible for participation in the SLA Certificate Program. Upon completion of the SLA Certificate program, participants will have completed a teaching ePortfolio that they can use for their job searches and future teaching careers it will include a teaching statement, syllabi, class activities, and evidence of pedagogical training and professional development.

TEFL graduates without state teaching certification can get jobs in private elementary and high schools, and sometimes can find work in public school systems where ESL teachers are in short .
