The graduate degree program in Geography empowers our graduates to design and conduct significant research. Years ago, we made an explicit choice to structure our department around research and teaching in the areas of human-environment interaction and GIScience. Within these core areas, we offer programs in environmental policy, land-use, geography of health, environmental hazards, spatial environmental modeling, and geographic information science (geoinformatics). Our ideal applicants are talented, curious, and motivated, with research interests aligned with these topics.

Established in 1946, the Geographical and Sustainability Sciences has long focused on graduate education and research. Our graduate students investigate a wide range of social, environmental, health, and GIScience topics, from applied methodological problems in the master program to advanced theoretical research and academic preparation in the doctoral program.

The University of Iowa is a Carnegie Doctoral Research-Extensive ( R1 ) university. Our strong research foundation not only supports intellectual activity in geography, but also provides rich opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

The Geographical and Sustainability Sciences has dropped the GRE requirement.

Fall admission and no interest in an assistantship May 1.

Complete the Application for an Assistantship form and return it to the Geography (do not send this form to the graduate school).

In certain instances where research assistantships are available a student may be funded longer than the traditional time period.

After the Graduate School receives a complete application packet the department will review the material and notify the graduate school of their decision. This happens on a continuous basis throughout the year.

We typically allow up to 15 credits of graduate coursework taken as a student-at-large to be transferred towards the degree. The actual number accepted will be determined by the students committee in consultation with the graduate coordinator.

You are strongly encouraged to do this before arrival on campus so that you begin work towards degree completion as soon as you arrive on campus.

Each student has a custom designed plan of courses. GEOG 600, 604, 663, 663 are required for all graduate students.

Most MS students complete their degree in 2 years or 2 years and 1 semester.

PhD students must have a master degree before eligible for a Ph.D.
