Geology and Earth Science certificate programs

The School of Earth, Environment, and Society offers a graduate certificate in Geospatial Technology. The purpose of the certificate program is to provide graduate students with training in geospatial theory, research design, and its application in fields related to their discipline. Because this is a joint endeavor of Geology, Geography, and Environmental Programs, students may opt for a sequence of courses that will be focused in either the natural or the social sciences, depending on their disciplinary orientation. Requirements for the certificate consist of a sequence of courses no research project is required. Students may take these courses as part of their regular M.S. degree requirements. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related geospatial techniques are fast-growing and increasingly applied to almost all sectors of University of Missouri-Kansas City society. Examples include environmental mapping, urban planning, and public resource management.

Additional Advanced Certificate in Urban Teaching and Leadership [UT1] (0 Additional Credits). Additional Advanced Certificate in Digitally-Rich Teaching in K-12 Schools [OT3] (3 Additional Credits). Students interested in also pursuing one or Advanced Certificates - see Optional Enhancements section - can reduce the number of additional credits needed to meet these programs' requirements by choosing electives appropriately. Note, however, that internships and field experiences (identified by a course number that starts with EDF) cannot be counted towards the minimum requirement of a total of 30 credits of coursework for any master Program. Be sure to discuss options with your advisor early in your program. For students also pursuing an Advanced Certificate in Digitally-Rich Teaching in K-12 Schools, EDU434 and EDU486 can count as the two specialization courses. In addition to the coursework indicated above, in order to graduate and to receive the certification(s) licensure (if any) you are seeking Geology and Earth Science program has additional requirements. When that is the case, we have listed these requirements but also indicated that they are not a graduation requirement.

The certificate program is designed for working professionals who want a specialization in this field. The goal is to provide first-rate continuing education to professionals or geology students who want to become experts in carbonate geology. To reach this goal we offer courses for a comprehensive education that covers carbonate sedimentology, seismic stratigraphy, petrophysics, and geochemistry for an advanced knowledge and understanding in carbonate systems. The Certificate Program is offered in the Spring Semester and 1st Summer Session of each year. A successful completion of the program will require 16 course credits to be taken. There are ten electable 2 or 3-credit courses in the program (see below). Particpants will not write a thesis but the courses are structured in a way that classroom knowledge is directly used in subsequent laboratory classes and projects. The current tuition fee is $2020 credit. A bachelor degree or equivalent degree is required for attendance. This requirement can be offset by 5 years of working experience in geoscience. No GRE or TOEFL test scores are required. Demonstration of English proficiency will be required for I-20 issuance for foreign participants. Registration for the Certificate Program will start in the spring and summer of each year and will be handled by the MPS Office of RSMAS. To advance students' knowledge and understanding of the physical, chemical, and dynamic processes that form carbonates. Certificate graduates will have acquired specialty knowledge in carbonate geology that can be applied to industrial and societal needs.
