Requirements for the PhD Program in German Studies Literature. Students take 4 courses per term for 2 years, with a total of 16 courses required 3 of those courses may be audited GMAN 501, Methods of Teaching German as a World Language, is required for all students. Established in 1890, the department offers a broad range of courses on German literature and culture and is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in their areas of interest. We provide not only a solid grounding in German-language cultural and literary traditions but, at the same time, vigorously pursue interdisciplinary study informed by the latest methodological and theoretical movements. Our Department has particular strengths in approaches, to race, gender and sexuality, intermediality, history of the material text, German-Jewish studies, translation theory, cinema studies, the environmental humanities, and pedagogy. The concentration in German area studies combines relevant courses in history, international relations, and comparative economics with courses in German literature, culture, and language. Students may concentrate on a theme or in a historical period from the Middle Ages to the present. The focus of the major is generally on the history of ideas as reflected in German written documents. Students may also concentrate in German cinema studies.

The German Studies offers a Ph.D. program that both provides a coherent perspective on major developments in German literature, culture and critical thought in the modern period (1650 to the present) and affords students the opportunity to develop their own specialized interests in German Studies. The program requires a secondary field of study consisting of a coherent sequence of four courses outside the Department. Some examples of possible specialized programs of study are Media Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Visual Arts, Philosophy, Music or Theater. Drawing on the expertise of eminent scholars in these fields at Brown, the program thus fosters an interdisciplinary approach to the field of German Studies.
