The goal of the Graduate Program of the Human Genetics at UCLA is to train the next generation of leaders in human genetics and genomics.

This rapidly evolving field of research incorporates multiple areas of modern experimental biology (including but not limited to molecular and behavioral genetics, epigenetics, biochemisty, cell and developmental biology, imaging, and large-scale omics approaches such as genomics, transcriptomics and functional genomics) and of computational biology (including bioinformatics and biostatistics). The Human Genetics at the University of Michigan was founded by Dr. James V. Neel in 1956 and was the first human genetics department in the United States. The initial focus of the department was human heredity, and this view has grown in breadth and depth through the genomic and post-genomic eras.

Collaborations within the department, across the University, nation-wide and internationally emphasize the crucial role of genetics in addressing global problems in human biology and disease.

A central mission of the Genetics and Genomics Graduate Program is to train students to confront these problems scientifically through a rigorous but flexible foundation in coursework and research.

Graduate students have the opportunity to carry out interdisciplinary genetics research in diverse areas.

The core training in Genetics and Genomics consists of courses in molecular genetics, the genetic basis of human disease, and quantitative and statistical genetics. Additional courses are selected from within the Human Genetics and throughout the University to strengthen one or core areas.

While teaching is not a Program requirement, most Genetics and Genomics students spend at least one term as a teaching assistant, generally in their second or third year. Additional teaching opportunities are available through several outreach programs.

After completion of required coursework, the doctoral dissertation is generally completed within 5 years of graduate study however, this varies among students.

Our students have received national fellowships and awards for their research, have served on national committees including in the American Society of Human Genetics, and have been recognized with the University of Michigan Distinguished Dissertation Award, the highest honor the University confers to recognize graduate student accomplishments.

Neel Lectureship and the Thomas D. Gelehrter Lectureship. The Human Genetics sponsors a seminar series of external speakers, short courses with several speakers on a related theme, and a weekly seminar given by trainees in the Department. There are also a variety of informal special interest groups that offer opportunities for students to present and get advice on their research findings.

All students must complete course requirements for either Computational or Molecular track.

HGG 621 EPH 602: Required for Computational Track students only (may be taken as elective otherwise).

HGG 650: Required for Molecular Track students only (may be taken as elective otherwise).

The PhD in Human Genetics and Genomics (HGG) curriculum allows candidates to pursue a track in molecular or computational genetics by their second year of training however, all students complete a core curriculum in the first three years of graduate study. Students will also participate in seminars and journal clubs in the fall and spring semesters, through all years of study.

Family Studies and Genetic Analysis which are requirements for completing the HGG degree. Courses in computational quantitative skills, including biostatistics and bioinformatics will also form part of the first year PIBS curriculum. Each PIBS student completes at least three lab rotations of nine weeks each and chooses a dissertation laboratory (and graduate program) during the latter half of the spring semester. If necessary a fourth rotation may be possible, and in this case a laboratory choice may be deferred until June. For these presentations the students will be divided into four groups with related research interests.

After choosing a mentor and laboratory at the end of the first year, a student becomes a member of the HGG Program. Students select and follow a track in molecular genetics or computational genetics in the first semester of year 2. At this point course requirements differ slightly between these two paths: Students in the molecular genetics track take Advanced Topics in Molecular Genetics (HGG 650) in the second semester, while the computational genetics track students take a second course in biostatistics (EPH 602) and a course in Design and Analysis of Human Genomic Studies (HGG 621).

In addition to the required core courses, all students participate in a clinical rotation and serve one semester as a teaching assistant for a core course any time after passing the Qualifying Examination.

It is expected that on average, students will complete the program in five years.

The Interdepartmental PhD Program in Human Genetics and Genomics (HGG) aims to train scientists broadly in areas of human genetics and genomics relevant to human health and disease. Human genetics is a multidisciplinary field that requires training in three core competencies: clinical, molecular, and statistical genetics. This broad training differentiates human genetics graduate programs from other programs in molecular biology, biochemistry, epidemiology, or statistics that focus training on one of the three core areas. The mission of the HGG is to prepare the next generation of genomic scientists to conduct research in molecular, statistical and clinical genetics and to translate these research results into improved medical care and public health interventions.

The Student Handbook is the official source of guidelines for graduate study in the Human Genetics. Requirements of the doctoral program and duties of doctoral students are described in detail. Each doctoral student will be governed by the requirements and policies stated in the edition of the Student Handbook in effect at the time of matriculation.

The goal of the doctoral program is to prepare students for careers leading genetics and genomics research in academia or industry. Toward this end, students will gain proficiency in the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to begin a career as an independent scientist. These educational goals are organized into eight doctoral program competencies. After successful completion of the doctoral program, students will be able to.

Describe mechanisms by which genes and the environment interact to affect the distribution of health and disease in human populations.

Analyze and communicate published research in human genetics at the level needed for effective research and teaching.

Coursework for doctoral students is typically undertaken during the first two years in the program, although advanced courses may be taken in later years. All doctoral students will complete the four core Human Genetics courses as well as the core Public Health curriculum. Advanced courses offered through Human Genetics and other departments will provide students instruction in their chosen area of concentration. Examples of courses offered through other departments that may help a student specialize their studies can be found in the general list of suggestions for elective courses. Certificate programs offered through the Graduate School of Public Health can be pursued to further customize the education of doctoral students.

The doctoral program offers training in molecular genetics, statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology, and genetic counseling. This includes advanced coursework and outside-of-the-classroom training and research experiences. For example, during the second year and beyond, doctoral students will choose advanced courses in Human Genetics and elective courses across the Schools of the Health Sciences pertaining to their area of interest. Research experiences including dissertation research will provide in-depth, hands-on training in the chosen area.

Starting when students register for courses for their second year, and prior to registration for each semester thereafter, students and their mentors will complete brief evaluation forms. The purpose of these forms is to document satisfactory student performance.

An Individualized Development Plan provides an organizational structure for deliberate career planning. Given the competitive job market and diverse career opportunities for scientists completing a doctorate, career planning is an essential component of the doctoral program. Therefore, doctoral students will maintain an Individualized Development Plan in which to organize their career goals and document progress toward their professional development. By setting goals, developing and implementing strategies to pursue these goals, and monitoring progress, new PhDs will achieve greater success in their careers after graduation.
