The Certificate in Positive Youth Development equips professionals with an understanding of the theoretical, empirical and experiential bases of the Positive Youth Development (PYD) model. PYD offers an applied perspective to frame applications (programs and policies) for promoting positive development among youth living in diverse communities.

This certificate program is 4 courses for a total of 12 credits.

The program can be completed in one year.

The curriculum benefits early-career and mid-career professional youth development leaders in agencies, institutions, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations that serve youth and may be completed in one year.

Applied Developmental Science (ADS) uses research human development to inform programs and policies pertinent to topics of social importance. Students will integrate readings and class discussions of ADS theory and research with information community-based programs. The focus of this class will be a discussion and analysis of the role of developmental research and, in particular from longitudinal research (for example, the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development), in framing applications (programs and policies) for promoting positive development among youth. In addition to an of the theoretical models that are the bases of the PYD perspective, the course will present the work of researchers who have conducted applied developmental studies of adolescents and their ecological settings in order to advance understanding of how individuals and context are involved across the adolescent years in providing a basis for both healthy and problematic development.

This course is designed to provide students with an of the theoretical and empirical knowledge base concerning adolescent development. In particular, four broad areas will be considered: (1) psychological, biological, and cognitive transitions (2) central developmental tasks of adolescence (3) primary contextual influences and (4) prevalent types of problematic functioning that emerge during adolescence. The overarching goals of the course are to provide a solid and broad understanding of how and why adolescents develop in the manner they do, and to extend this developmental understanding into research, application, and practice.

Examines a range of social issues relevant to children and families and the social policies directed at such issues. Discusses policy creation, implementation and evaluation, and considers the roles of advocacy, research and politics. Addresses how current social policies impact children and families and compares U.S. policies to those in other industrialized countries. Likely topics include poverty, economic redistribution, work family balance, early childhood education, educational reform, and other issues. The seminar aims to help students think critically the political and empirical issues involved in assessing social issues and developing and evaluating social policies.

An intensive introduction to student development, this course focuses on interdisciplinary theories of intellectual and psychosocial change among late adolescent and adult learners in post-secondary education. Research on student outcomes is also covered. Special attention is paid to the implications of ethnicity, age, gender, and other individual differences for the development of students. Course projects include individual and collaborative opportunities to relate theory to professional work with college students.

This course addresses the major psychological and socio-cultural issues in development from childhood through adulthood. The theory, research, and practice in the field of life span development are examined and evaluated.

Issues of school reform are constantly in the media--high-stakes testing, charter schools, the Common Core. At the heart of these reforms are teachers and the work they do with students in their classrooms. In this course, students look in-depth at the nature of teaching and learning in schools and classrooms. In particular, the course attends to issues and practices linked to current efforts at educational reform, approaching these matters through active inquiry and experiential enactment of such practices. Focused reflection is also a central component of this class.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to examine the theoretical scholarship and empirical research on race, class, and gender in American higher education.

This course will explore the theory and practice of family-school-community relationships with a particular focus on the role of school leaders in enacting organizational models, educational programs, and political strategies designed to increase authentic parent and community participation in schools and other educational organizations.

This graduate course explores the science and practice of sport and exercise psychology with two applied themes: sport-based youth development and sport for social justice. Course content will include individual factors such as personality, motivation, anxiety, exercise adherence, and addictive and unhealthy behaviors, as well as social and environmental factors such as group cohesion, coaching efficacy, parental influence, and character development. The course will challenge students to connect principles of sport and exercise psychology to sport-based youth development and sport for peace and social justice. Therefore, aspects of the course will also utilize a sociological sociocultural lens. Discussions and assignments will explore practical implications for various applied psychology settings including schools, communities, and sport and recreation organizations.

This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical and practice aspects of career development and the psychology of working. Students learn existing theories and related research pertaining to the vocational behavior of individuals across the life span. Through readings, case discussions, and lectures, students learn construct effective, ethical, and humane means of helping people to develop their work lives to their fullest potential.

How you plan your certificate track is completely up to you!

Once the staff have processed those who have completed a CE L track, you will receive a certificate and letter of completion to share with others. Your supervisor and or manager will also be informed of your accomplishment via email.

Although both are used to support growth and help you achieve success, they are different entities. Certificate tracks are meant to be customized for you by you. ILEPs are structured and typically requested commonly by a supervisor to support you in your goals or prepare you for an upcoming change promotion.

The Human Resources Development graduate certificate offered at the GSE is designed for those working or interested in working in human resources and who want to improve their skills and knowledge specifically regarding learning and teaching in the workplace. The coursework in the program will focus on skills, concepts, and strategies to improve the adult teaching and learning components of human resource development in organizations. Students will explore career and workforce development through a research-grounded lens of adult and continuing education theory and practice. Through completion of the required coursework, candidates will acquire a grounding in the practical aspects of the discipline and develop an understanding of the intellectual and research basis for effective practice in the field.

Transfer credits are not accepted for this program and no program requirements may be completed at any other institution.

Human Development and Family Studies does not include coursework leading to a New Jersey school personnel license.

Students enrolled in the Human Resources Development graduate certificate program will begin their study with an introduction to the foundational philosophical, historical, and practical underpinnings of adult education practice. Students will gain practical experience working in a human resources-related professional setting and an understanding of the profession, as well as explore career development and workforce development with reference to adult and continuing education theory and practice.

Earning a graduate certificate at the GSE allows candidates to advance their understanding of, and earn practical skills pertaining to, human resources development and adult education.

The graduate certificate in leadership development provides in-depth understanding of organizations as human systems and the practical knowledge required to improve organizational effectiveness through leadership and training. Quantitative and qualitative methods: The methodology curriculum includes courses in quantitative and qualitative methodology, providing students with the tools to address research questions with a range of techniques.

Applied translational science: Students are trained to do research at the intersection of advancing basic scientific knowledge and developing knowledge that can be directly applied to real world settings. The Graduate Certificate in Dispute Resolution (ADRC) requires completion of 21 graduate credit hours (7 classes). Coursework comprises descriptive readings, observations, simulated exercises, and discussion. A sample degree plan and timeline are provided for reference however, it only provides one option for enrollment and timeline. Dispute Resolution offers rolling admission and start dates throughout the year with no enrollment minimums per term. Students are not required to take courses in any particular order or sequence with the exception of those courses that have established prerequisites.

Conflict can arise in groups, between individuals in many different settings. The focus of this course will be on the psychological context of negotiation, the personal and social influences on the parties in negotiation, and the impact of these conditions and behaviors on the outcome.

Investigates the dynamics, benefits, constraints, and essential skills needed in third-party intervention to facilitate a constructive resolution of conflict. In addition, the mediation process is defined, and the history, development, and theory of conflict resolution in negotiation is examined.

The concentration areas offered within the Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management Program cover a broad spectrum of applications and topics. As an aid to planning, the following four concentrations have been set up to assist in the selection of elective coursework. All courses listed within concentrations can be taken as electives. Students select four HDDR courses from within concentration areas or across concentration areas depending on their needs. This graduate certificate program is designed to serve the advanced educational needs of professionals who educate and train workers and volunteers, but who do not need a masters degree.

The certificate program consists of 12 graduate credit hours, and is designed to address the essential skills and competencies for professional practitioners in human resource development.

Graduates will use their skills to develop and administer training programs to produce a effective and competitive workforce. The certificate in human resource development can be applied toward a masters degree in adult education at Buffalo State. This program does not lead to initial teaching certification.

Advanced, or graduate, certificates are designed to provide focused study to support a particular career interest.
