The HDE Program Core Experience (4 credits), is a combination of required coursework, program-wide events, and small group experiences. It is designed to help you develop the capacity to bridge research and practice across human development contexts. Whether your professional trajectory leads you to focus on children, families, communities, or organizations, there are through lines (ways of thinking and connecting) from the field of human development that can expand our vision and understanding. For example, understanding individual development within the larger ecological contexts or recognizing human relationships as the driver for many different developmental outcomes. Research methods and applied professional skills courses (4 credits), you will choose from a list of qualitative, quantitative, and skills-based courses. Course subject matter may include statistics and data science in education and organizations, participatory action research for educational justice, and ethnographic methods.

The program prepares students for careers in academic life, primarily in psychology, sociology, or human development in research programs of governmental agencies at various levels and in a range of programs in community agencies and private enterprise.
All students are required to complete at least two semesters of graduate-level training in statistics and one semester of teaching. The field also requires that students complete a predoctoral research project or master degree before taking the Admission to Candidacy examination.

The Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) is an interdisciplinary study of how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development. It was designed to advance the understanding of the developmental pathways of both positive and negative human social behaviors. In particular, the Project examined the pathways to juvenile delinquency, adult crime, substance abuse, and violence. At the same time, the Project also provided a detailed look at the environments in which these social behaviors take place by collecting substantial amounts of data urban Chicago, including its people, institutions, and resources.
The Project design consisted of two major components. The first was an intensive study of Chicago neighborhoods, particularly the social, economic, organizational, political, and cultural structures and the dynamic changes that take place in the structures over time. The second component was a series of coordinated longitudinal studies that followed over 6,000 randomly selected children, adolescents, and young adults to examine the changing circumstances of their lives and the personal characteristics that might lead them toward or away from a variety of antisocial behaviors.

The doctoral program at Eliot-Pearson helps graduate students integrate developmental research and theory with understanding or modeling effective practice, and offers opportunities to work in agencies and organizations that serve children, youth and families, and to conduct research. The PhD in Child Study and Human Development provides individually designed programs of study in the context of common milestones and shared training objectives. We subscribe to a primary-mentor-mentee model of doctoral preparation however, doctoral students are supported by our community of scholars in various ways. Through a rigorous combination of research training, coursework and other mentored experiences, and an applied internship, students develop substantive expertise in an area of scholarship, and develop competencies in ten other areas.
In general, the PhD program is for full-time students only. Tuition scholarships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships are available, on a competitive basis, to full-time PhD candidates.
The doctoral program prepares students to make important contributions to theory, research, policy, and or practice and to contribute in diverse settings.
