Students registering for spring courses this week can choose from a wide variety of offerings exploring how digital and computational methods illuminate the humanities.

Digital humanities tools and methods also figure prominently in several other humanities courses. For instance, Esther Schor, Leonard L.

The course combines readings by authors like Virginia Woolf, Zadie Smith, and Monica Ali with instruction in digital tools, including mapping and annotation. Students will apply these tools to curate their research project: an online archive.

Schor is assembling a lineup of guests who will join the virtual conversation on course readings and offer insight on migration-related issues.

Identifying and developing courses at the intersection of the humanities and computer science is crucial to the work of the Humanities Computing Curriculum Committee (HC3), formed last academic year.

The Certificate in Humanistic Studies promotes this kind of interdisciplinary inquiry, as well. Students in the certificate program can elect to build their junior and senior curricula to explore digital approaches to the humanities.

The Graduate Certificate in the Environmental Humanities is available to Yale doctoral students who seek to establish a strong foundation in environmental humanities topics and methodologies across the humanities disciplines.

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate will gain skills working in interdisciplinary environmental settings and representing humanities perspectives on a broad range of environmental topics.

Students who are pursuing the certificate are expected to update their progress in the Graduate Certificate Requirements Checklist once a semester.

Note: The Graduate Certificate is not available to masters students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the present time.

Requirements of the Graduate Certificate in the Environmental Humanities.

The Graduate Certificate includes coursework, research, and teaching requirements.

Each student must take three approved graduate or professional courses focusing entirely or substantially on environmental themes, broadly defined.

Elective courses will be chosen from a list of the environmental humanities graduate courses that are being offered each semester.

Each student defines their individualized concentration. At the conclusion of the certificate, students must submit an essay of 4000-8000 characters (approximately 1-2 pages single-spaced) that explains their approach to the environmental humanities and that justifies the courses that they have taken as part of the certificate program.

Each student must complete both a fall semester and a spring semester of the workshop, but the two semesters of student participation need not be consecutive. The fall semester each year will emphasize key concepts and major intellectual currents. The spring semester each year will emphasize pedagogy, methods, and public practice. The specific conceptual topics will vary each year. Students who have previously enrolled in the course may audit the course in a subsequent year.

Is a half-credit course that will be offered in both the fall and spring semesters (one credit total) starting in the academic year. Participation in the course typically does not count toward departmental coursework requirements.

Students may fulfill the teaching requirement by serving as a teaching fellow for an approved environmental humanities course or by completing an approved public humanities project. Other options are available to students if appropriate teaching opportunities are not available.

The Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities is a 12-credit certificate program designed to equip graduate students with the skills and knowledge necessary to employ various digital technologies for analysis and interpretation in the humanities fields. This program has 31 enrolled students from 9 departments and three schools across UVA. It teaches students to use computational methods to enhance their teaching and research, to increase public access to humanistic resources such as cultural heritage content, and to bring the interpretive and critical skills of the humanities to the study of the relationship between technology and society.

As a global leader in the digital humanities, UVA extensive resources enable our students to pursue innovative humanities research and teaching. Our unique curricular framework encourages DH Certificate students in humanities and related departments to unite humanistic approaches with insight into the practical workings of the digital age.

This new location will offer opportunities for collaboration, synergy and shared resources between data science and the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

Requirements: DH Certificate requirements are designed to be flexible so that students can complete their graduate degrees within departmental guidelines and timeframes. Introduction to DH (DH 8991) is offered each spring the Practicum course (DH 8000) is offered every semester.

Methods: DH methods can enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public humanities projects. Although they are often hybridized in practice, the technical methodologies can be categorized by the type of material under examination. When humanists bring digital methods to bear on their subject matter, it tends to fall into one of the seven following loose categories of object: (1) texts, (2) images, (3) time-based media (such as video and audio), (4) geospatial information, (5) XR (augmented and virtual reality), (6) telemetry along with 3D prototyping and printing, and (7) structured data in its various forms, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, and metadata.

All Digital Humanities courses are open to current graduate students at NYU.

Students enrolled in the Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities will be awarded a Naomi Sager Scholarship in their admission offer.

The Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities trains students across the boundary between digital tools and critical insights, seeking to foster research skills that fuse computational methods and critical theory. Students learn the fundamentals of programming alongside the history and theory of digital technologies, as well as techniques for the analysis and structuring of data, and of publishing on the modern web. Students learn to advance academic knowledge in their own disciplines, and to build transferrable skills for carrying that knowledge into their future careers.

Students pursuing the Advanced Certificate must complete Introduction to Programming as well as two of the three core courses. A maximum of 12 points may be shared with the points required for the PhD.

Students not already enrolled at NYU may Advanced Certificate program through the Graduate School of Arts and Science. GRE results and a writing sample are not required.

In general, dual degree students may cross-count 12 credits with their primary degree, but will need to take two additional courses to earn the certificate. Students funded through the MacCracken program pay no additional tuition or fees for the additional courseload.

This course introduces the history and concept of the digital. Digital systems are representation systems, and so engage a wide variety of philosophical sources, literary theory, and media theory. Digital technologies developed from a dense multidiscplinary discourse that included mathematics, language philosophy, logic, and philosophy, reposing the classical metaphysical question of the relationship of representation to reality. The course focuses on three concepts that emerged from this rich overlap: information, computation, and the network. These concepts are associated with Claude Shannon, Alan Turing, and Warren McCulloch, and rely on frameworks from Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Immanuel Kant, and the trajectory from Gottlob Frege and Charles Sanders Peirce through the Vienna School logical positivism, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and beyond. The philosophical origins of digital technologies form a dialogue with media-theoretical assessments of those same technologies, and the course will give particular weight to the works of Friedrich Kittler, N. Katherine Hayles, Wendy Chun, and, Luciana Parisi, Ramon Amaro, and Sianne Ngai, with a focus on bridging the gap between the origins of digital technologies and their extensive aesthetic and political-economic consequences in the present. This course fulfills a core requirement for the Digital Humanities Certificate.

The arts and humanities in USC Dornsife span a wide spectrum of majors, including art history, classics, comparative literature and creative writing in addition to French, Italian, Slavic Languages and Literature, Spanish and Portuguese, and East Asian Languages and Cultures.

Important centers and institutes reside within USC Dornsife that focus on the arts and humanities and include USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute, the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, the East Asian Studies Center, the Korean Studies Institute, and the Institute of Modern Russian Culture.

Beyond the great work in individual departments, USC Dornsife also offers interdisciplinary graduate programs of relevance, including the Visual Studies Graduate Certificate. A Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities allows you to pursue an organized course of study in an emerging field of research that is interdisciplinary in scope and collaborative in nature. This field is constantly developing in relation to new digital technologies that have changed the objects of study, methods, and opportunities for research and teaching in existing humanities fields.

Earn your certificate in 12 semester hours, with your choice of electives ranging from Digital Space and Place and Analyzing Complex Digitized Data to Introduction to Computational Statistics and Special Topics in Data Science.

Complete a final cumulative project that uses digital methods to address a significant research question in your field of study, involving both a practical component and a written reflection. You may choose between many different forms, including but not limited to: a data set or digital collection, a prototype or wireframe, a game or interactive narrative, or a set of data analyses and or visualizations.

The graduate certificate in digital humanities (DH) prepares graduate students in the humanities and social sciences to access and manage humanistic data, apply digital methods, and think critically technology and computation. To complete the certificate, students will design and prototype an original DH project, from concept to final output, but will also become conversant in the debates, conversations, and theories of digital scholarship.

Minimum TOEFL score of 550 or higher on the paper-based test, or 77 or higher on the Internet-based test (iBT) for applicants whose native language is not English. Applicants who take the TOEFL iBT must achieve the following minimum test scores, in addition to the overall required score of at least 77: reading, 19 listening, 14 speaking, 18 and writing, 18. Applicants taking the IELTS must score at least 6.5 on the Academic Module. Applicants taking the PTE must score at least 58.

Note: Per US regulations, a visa cannot be issued for a residential certificate program only. Non-dual program applicants will need to already reside in the US before being accepted into the Digital Humanities graduate certificate program.

You must complete the application in the system and pay an application fee to be considered for the certificate program. A current CV is required.

Your completion requirements will be reviewed and you will be notified regarding the status of your certificate program completion. Please keep in mind that an application is required via the online application portal.

The Certificate in Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary graduate certificate drawing on courses from the English, History, and Modern Languages and Literatures departments. Students pursuing the graduate certificate will take a minimum of three digital humanities-focused and or digital methods courses (9 credit hours). All students pursuing the certificate will be required to take the DH practicum course (MLL 774). Students may fulfill the additional 6 credits required for the certificate by choosing two other digital humanities or digital methods courses from a list of approved courses offerings. Students may also petition to use courses outside of the approved course list to fulfill program requirements on an ad-hoc basis. The final requirement is the creation and approval of an online portfolio showcasing projects and research utilizing digital humanist methodologies.
