The Graduate Certificate in the Public Humanities builds on the Center for the Humanities’ pioneering work in the public humanities and its related programs for graduate students, including the Public Humanities Exchange (HEX) and the Public Humanities Fellowships. American Studies PhD students are not eligible for the certificate program because they have a similar program (for an MA in Public Humanities) already in place. The graduate certificate in classical philosophy provides training, special skills, and knowledge equipping students for scholarly work and teaching that involve classical philosophy. The Graduate Certificate in Italian Studies provides an opportunity for students to complement their doctoral studies with a coordinated multidisciplinary training in the Program in Italian Studies, and take part in an intellectually stimulating interdisciplinary community. The Graduate Certificate in Latin American Studies is open to all Princeton University graduate students currently enrolled in any Ph.D. program in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, math or natural sciences. Students enrolled in the Master in Public Administration Degree Program at the Woodrow Wilson School may also enroll in the certificate if they write a research paper on a Latin American topic in consultation with the program director.

The Graduate Certificate Program in Public Humanities offers a unique opportunity to currently enrolled PhD students interested in public engagement and the work of non-profit cultural organizations. Students in the certificate program will have an in-depth and hands-on understanding of these eight vectors, but may choose to specialize, through practicum, in several cross-cutting themes and methods. The certificate program requires four courses: two introductory courses, one practicum course, and one elective. Students seeking the certificate would take either AMST2540 or AMST2650 before taking electives. The Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities integrates the study of the liberal arts with the tools of computer science. The courses in the Advanced Certificate give students proficiency in Python, a popular programming language widely used in data visualization and analysis, in database tools essential for organizing and publishing large collections of digital materials, and in website design and development. The Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities can be completed in one year. Students enrolled in the Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities will be awarded a Naomi Sager Scholarship in their admission offer. Graduate students pursuing degrees in any program at UW–Madison are welcome to seek admission into the Graduate Certificate in the Public Humanities. Students can declare their intention to pursue the certificate at any time. To receive the certificate, they must complete an application form, and are welcome to submit it at any time for review and feedback from the certificate advisor, Emily Clark. There are no formal prerequisites for matriculation into the graduate certificate program in terms of coursework. However, only those students with B.A. or B.S. degrees from accredited colleges or universities who are currently enrolled graduate students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison are permitted to enter the graduate certificate program. Graduate students pursuing any degree in any program at UW–Madison are invited to obtain a Graduate Certificate in the Public Humanities. The certificate is not a stand-alone program. Students who wish to receive the Graduate Certificate in the Public Humanities must take a core course, INTER-LS 700 Public Humanities: Theories, Methods, Cases offered each year, and develop a coherent, thematic sequence of three additional courses, for a total of 12 credits.
