The Immunology (IMUN) is an introductory graduate course which surveys most areas of immunology. It is assumed that students have a background in biochemistry and molecular biology, and at least some familiarity with immunological concepts. Topics covered include the major histocompatibility complex, structure of antibodies and T cell receptors, antigen-antibody interactions, the generation of diversity of immunoglobulins and B cells, antigen presentation, and immunological tolerance. There will be two exams, both of which will require assessment and interpretation of experimental data and or readings from the primary literature.

The relationship between basic immunology and clinical immunologic diseases is emphasized. Course topics include plasma protein systems B cell, T cell, macrophage immunology immunohematology tumor immunology benign and malignant, immunoproliferative disorders neuro-immunology pulmonary immunology renal immunology immune complex disease and immunoregulatory abnormalities.

This tutorial course is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of a specific branch of Immunology. The tutorial can be used to enable students to become deeply acquainted with the literature related to their thesis projects or to expand on a topic that the student found interesting in one of their basic courses. The course is currently the only immunology elective and is, therefore, required for all Immunology Graduate Group students. It is also open as an elective to BGS students who meet the prerequisite. The tutorial course will be examined by the program director and the tutorial leader and the grade will be based on a written paper on the subject studied (5 to 10 typewritten pages) and by an oral presentation of the paper (15 to 20 minutes).

Prerequisites: A senior graduate or professional school course in Immunology.

The goal of the Vaccines course is to expand on student s general understanding of the immune system and to focus this understanding towards the application of vaccination. Further the course will give the student a sense of how these principles are applied to vaccine and immune therapeutic development. The course covers basic science as well as the Clinical, Ethical Political implications of Modern Vaccines. Initial lectures will review immune mechanisms believed to be responsible for vaccine induced protection from disease. Subsequent lectures build on this background to explore the science of vaccines for diverse pathogens, including agents of bioterrorism as well as vaccines for cancer. An appreciation for the application of laboratory science to the clinical development of vaccines is provided in the next section of the course along with lectures that focus on the ethical implications of vaccines in different situations. The financial implications of specific vaccines and their impact on the global community, is a specific focus of the course. The course is lecture style and will have a required reading list prepared in advance to provide the students background for the specific topic. Students will be graded by course participation as well as by a final written exam. The course is intended for graduate students or Medical Students in various MS, Ph.D. or MD Ph.D. programs on the campus as well as local scientists and professionals in the community. As a prerequisite students should have taken biology, biochemistry or immunology courses at the advanced college level. A final project will be graded from all students. The final project is to propose in a written report a vaccine strategy for a current pathogen of importance that does not as yet have an effective vaccine. Strategies used should build on the material presented in the class lectures. The details of the final paper will be further discussed in class.

Prerequisites: The course is intended for graduate students or Medical Students in various MS, Ph.D. or MD Ph.D. programs on the campus as well as local scientists and professionals in the community. As a prerequisite students should have taken biology, biochemistry or immunology courses at the advanced college level.

Three different rotations covering usually the fall semester of the first year through the fall semester of the second year are required of all Immunology Ph.D. students. Students will defend the rotation research in their Preliminary Exams.

Immunology and Infectious Disease. The Graduate Field of Immunology & Infectious Disease (IID) offers broad training in the areas of innate and adaptive immunity, along with the mechanisms used by pathogens to invade, replicate and spread within human and animal populations. We emphasize the basic principles underlying host-pathogen interactions and the experimental tools required to understand those interactions. We are particularly interested in how pathogens are recognized and eliminated by the host. This includes the signaling pathways utilized by granulocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and B- and T-lymphocytes in the context of infection and autoimmune dysfunction. On the pathogen side, we study a wide variety of disease agents (ranging from viruses to bacteria, protozoal, and worms pathogens) in order to identify the mechanisms they use to establish acute and chronic infection in different host species. Prior to the Program’s inception in 1999, there was no cohesive venue that fostered training and collaboration in immunology research at the University of Michigan.

The goal of the doctoral Program in Immunology at the University of Michigan is to train future leaders at the forefront of molecular and cellular immunology. The Graduate Program in Immunology (GPI) has been supported by an NIH Training Grant for over 25 years. Progress in basic immunology has informed many of the newest treatments for cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Students take couses in cell and molecular immunology, immunologic methods and transnational immunology, plus a core course in biochemistry, genetics, or cell biology. Electives are selected from a wide range of courses devised to complete the student preparation for advanced study and research.

Our trainees receive a strong knowledge base in immunology as well as the vital research presentation and writing skills required for their career development. Students emerge from this training experience with a thorough grounding in cellular and molecular immunology and an understanding of exploit this knowledge in the study of disease processes. Each student obtains sufficient experience in investigation, and a sufficient record of accomplishment to be considered a strong candidate for postdoctoral research training and support at nationally prominent labs.

After completing coursework, students take the preliminary exam during the second year. The preliminary examination tests the student’s ability to reason analytically and to develop ideas and defend them. The format consists of a written research proposal similar to the NIH research grant format on a topic of their choosing. The written proposal is followed by an oral defense of the research plan. The proposal is expected to be an in-depth presentation of a research plan to investigate a contemporary question in immunology. The student is responsible for identifying the question and devising logical and convincing experimental approaches to address the issue. In the written proposal and the oral defense, the student is expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the research problem, as well as to creatively think the topic and experimental design. Thus, the emphasis is on hypothesis testing and experimental design, as well as general knowledge in the field of immunology.

The Immunology Program has no formal teaching requirement, but will provide access and training to individuals who want a teaching experience.

The Immunology Program provides an interdisciplinary structure and an inclusive environment through which immunologists in a variety of departments can collaborate to meet educational and training objectives. Our goal is to continue to provide a firm basis in immunology through individualized training.

Drawing on resources from throughout the University, students first obtain a strong foundation in cellular and molecular immunology, then pursue individual interests in rotations while spanning a broad variety of cutting edge areas.

Every spring, the Immunology Program sponsors an off-campus retreat where selected research within the program is highlighted. Only graduate students and research fellows present their work.

The Immunology seminar series, held during the Fall and Winter terms, includes formal presentations by speakers from outside the University of Michigan. Students are encouraged to nominate and host external researchers whose work they find thrilling and innovative. Students are given the opportunity to meet with the speakers at a luncheon immediately following the seminar.
