Global and regional studies allow you to explore multiple aspects of our world through courses that encourage broad comparisons and courses that focus closely on particular places or cultural formations. The objective of the Certificate in Global and Regional Studies is to introduce you to a wide variety of analytical approaches and conceptual frames that will help you understand the forces that shape culture, trade, and other social exchanges worldwide.

Our world is paradoxically characterized by interconnection and regional differences, by connections and shared cultures, and by separations and borders. Few aspects of our lives are untouched by global connections: consider pressing global concerns such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, the fluctuations of national borders, alliances, and economies worldwide, the growing need to foster virtual collaboration and inclusive environments at work, and even cultural phenomena like world music and the new Godzilla movie. With the global and regional studies courses, you gain greater competence in understanding and mastering the impact of these connections, forces, and inclusions. In addition, you develop analytical, writing, and communication skills around these issues.

To earn a certificate, students complete four courses offered (two in global studies and two in regional studies), in any order. Students who complete the basic certificate may pursue an advanced certificate (6-course, 6 c.u.) by adding two additional courses (one in global studies and one in regional studies).

Academic credit is defined by the University of Pennsylvania as a course unit (c.u.). A course unit (c.u.) is a general measure of academic work over a period of time, typically a term (semester or summer). A c.u. (or a fraction of a c.u.) represents different types of academic work across different types of academic programs and is the basic unit of progress toward a degree. One c.u. is usually converted to a four-semester-hour course.

Learn key issues addressed by global policy, such as development goals, the environment, financial regulation, nuclear proliferation, democratization and state-building. Students in the Global Policy certificate program will build the tools, training and knowledge necessary to lead policy development in an increasingly interdependent world while engaging various governments, private industries, non-governmental organizations and international organizations. Applicants to this certificate program must hold a graduate degree from an accredited U.S. college, university or its foreign equivalent. A competitive graduate record that indicates strong academic ability is required, though applicants need not have extensive academic experience in public policy. Work experience in the public sector is desirable but not necessary.

To earn a certificate, students must complete the following four courses:.

Any four courses in the Global Policy Specialization of the MA in Public Policy Administration.

Any three courses in the Global Policy Specialization plus MPPA 407 Scope Theory of Public Policy.

Please note that courses completed in the certificate program cannot be transferred to the corresponding graduate degree.

This certificate program can be completed on campus or online, or a combination of both.

Students are required to maintain an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 (B). Every course creditable toward the certification must be taken for a letter grade.

This certification program is offered at the graduate level.

Current Columbia students are not eligible to earn the certification while enrolled in a degree program. However, they are eligible to take the individual courses for credit.

Students enrolled in (or on leave from) a degree program at SIPA are not eligible to receive the certificate. A student who earns the certificate and then later enrolls in a degree program at SIPA may not count any of the certificate courses toward the SIPA degree.

Strong written and oral communication skills are necessary to succeed in this certification program.

This certificate program is offered by the Institute for the Study of International Migration through the School of Continuing Studies. Participants discuss global migration trends, national and local security conditions, and social issues driving contemporary immigration policy and enforcement.

Advanced Studies in TEFL is a full-time three-month program of select courses to enhance your preparation and expertise in teaching English. You must enroll in a total of 12 UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies units, with the advice and approval of the TEFL Program Manager.
