The University of Georgia School of Law Graduate Certificate in International Law is a 15-hour academic credential designed for graduate students at the University of Georgia who seek to add an internationally-focused legal dimension to their program of study. This certificate program provides aspiring subject matter experts and policymakers with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to understand the laws, systems, and actors within international law.
The certificate will require a total of 15 credit hours, 9 of which must be taken through the School of Law. The coursework is intended to be completed across 4-5 consecutive academic semesters, although there is no hard deadline for completion. All students are required to take the following:.
JURI 6640, Public International Law: required introductory course (3 hours).
2-3 electives in International Law (totaling 6 hours).
Either the Global Governance Summer School (3 hours) or an additional elective in International Law (3 hours).
With the approval of the School of Law, certificate students may receive up to 6 hours of elective credit for courses outside of the School of Law.
UGA Graduate students from all academic disciplines are invited to apply for the certificate program every fall semester for enrollment the following spring. Cohorts of up to 10 students will be admitted for enrollment each spring semester.
Applicants will be asked to briefly describe how the certificate program may assist in the pursuit of personal, professional, and academic goals.

Graduate Certificate in International Law

The Certificate in International Law provides you insight into conduct international business, gives you an understanding of tackle important public international issues and introduces you to the inner workings of institutions such as the International Criminal Court and the World Trade Organization.
The certificate also offers you the ability to expand and apply your knowledge through participation in the study-abroad program in France, in-class simulations and other opportunities.
You will gain a foundational knowledge of international law, both public and private.
Required Capstone Courses (you must complete at least one).
A topical International Law course on current events.
Either of the courses listed in section 1.a.iii., if not counted toward the Required Basic Courses requirement for section 1.a.
Any of the courses listed in section 1.b., if not counted toward the Required Capstone Course requirement for section 1.b.
International Law

Students must complete a minimum of 12 units in classes that are approved for the International Law Certificate. See here for a current list of approved classes.Classes taken in summer abroad programs do not count toward the 12-unit requirement. Students who complete a semester-long international externship may count 3 units from the externship toward the 12-unit requirement.
Courses count towards the Certificate only if the student receives a grade of C or better (or credit, if the course is graded credit no credit), and the student must achieve an overall average of C+ (2.67) or better in the courses counted towards the certificate.
Students who graduate prior to August 1, 2017 must complete a Supervised Analytical Writing paper in a certificate-designated course. Students graduating after August 1, 2017, need not complete this requirement as the Supervised Analytical Writing Requirement has been eliminated.
Students must complete at least one study abroad program operated by Santa Clara University or a foreign university with which Santa Clara has a partnership agreement. Summer abroad programs operated by U.S. law schools other than Santa Clara University School of Law will not satisfy this requirement.
Only JD students are eligible to apply for, and be awarded, the International Law Certificate.
A student earns the International Law Certificate with honors if the student satisfies all of the applicable requirements and has an overall grade point average of B+ (3.67) or better in units counted towards the certificate.
