The Advanced Certificate in International Affairs provides a foundation of courses for students who want to understand and analyze the complex questions, risks and opportunities associated with living and working in a rapidly changing global environment. Our heightened economic and political interdependence generates challenges in areas such as social justice, diversity, international security, sustainable development, resource distribution, technology and human rights. over, rising nationalism and complex ethnic and religious tensions pose ongoing challenges while at the same time inviting strategies for compromise and cooperation. The certificate is available as a fully online or in-classroom certificate.
International Relations and Affairs is offered either mostly or fully online. Students entering the U.S. on an F-1 or J-1 Visa must enroll in a program full time. F-1 students are only permitted to enroll in one online course per semester and J-1 students may only enroll in non-credit online courses that do not count toward their degree program. The School of Continuing Professional Studies (CAPS) cannot guarantee face-to-face enrollment options each semester of full time enrollment, therefore cannot issue an I-20 or DS 2019 to F-1 and J-1 students for this program.
Students must choose courses from the International Affairs curriculum. With approval, up to 6 units of electives from a related area may apply.

Our graduate certificate programs give students the opportunity to study international affairs topics outside their chosen fields. Students enrich their academic programs with an in-depth exploration of today most relevant global issues. U.S. citizens may apply for a graduate certificate. Non-citizen visa applicants are not eligible for graduate certificates.
Students must complete their certificate programs within three calendar years. Certificate students must abide by all regulations of the Elliott School and The George Washington University. (See The George Washington University Bulletin. There is no foreign-language requirement for the certificate program.
Submission of a transfer application into the M.A. program before the student completes than nine credit hours in the graduate certificate program.
Good academic standing in the graduate certificate program (a minimum GPA of 3.0).
No transfer credits from other academic institutions will be accepted in the certificate program.
By the end of the second week of the student final semester in the certificate program, the student is responsible for applying for clearance in the certificate program. Clearance forms are available from the Graduate Student Services. The form must be completed in order for the student to receive the certificate. Students who successfully complete the certificate program may participate in the Elliott School Celebration of Student Achievement.
This permission must be granted at the beginning of the semester during which the course in taken.

The graduate certificate in international affairs allows currently matriculated graduate students across CU Boulder to examine global issues and position their own graduate research in a global context. It will also allow graduate students in specific disciplines to study international affairs in an interdisciplinary way and with access to courses across the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences.
