The certificate is intended to a) encourage current and future graduate students to deepen their training in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, b) document and highlight the expertise of current graduate students who are already engaged in a course of study with substantial Latin American Caribbean content, and c) allow non-matriculated students, who do not have the time or money to pursue a graduate degree, to earn a recognized credential demonstrating their expertise in Latin America for the purposes of employment or personal interests. Graduate students interested in broad training on Latin America and the Caribbean or in a Latin American or Caribbean region other than Central America, Mexico, and Brazil may complete the new, general certificate in Latin American Caribbean Studies.

LACS Graduate Certificate Since 2001, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) has provided scholars from every field the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate a context-based expertise on the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, while providing formal recognition of this expertise on students' transcripts. The graduate certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies is a non-degree credential available to all students enrolled in or admitted to graduate degree programs at Michigan. This certificate may be combined with either a master or a doctoral degree. Language Requirement Students must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or another language of Latin America or the Caribbean, such as Quechua, before obtaining the certificate. Double-Count Credits: If you have a degree at the master’s level, or will acquire one within a short period after applying for the Certificate, we encourage you to inquire Rackham’s double-count rule. The rule stipulates that a student may count only 3 credits of the total credits needed for a Master’s toward a Latin American and Caribbean studies certificate.

Graduate Certificate in Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies. The Latin American Studies Program offers an inter-disciplinary Graduate Certificate in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies. The Graduate Certificate is offered only in conjunction with a disciplinary master or doctoral degree program and is overseen by the CLACLS Executive Committee. The Graduate Certificate encourages graduate students to enhance their professional development by taking courses outside their discipline which contribute to training in internationalism, multiculturalism and foreign language competence.

In recent years, students in several departments have inquired with CLACS a graduate minor or certificate in Latin American Caribbean Studies. Yet, graduate certificates in Latin American and or Caribbean Studies are not currently offered at any nearby university. The interdisciplinary nature of CLACS, recently drawing students from Anthropology, History, Global Studies, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Geography, and Spanish Portuguese, etc., requires a broader graduate certificate for this very reason. CLACS is therefore pleased to announce a new Graduate Certificate in Latin American Caribbean Studies, which promotes interdisciplinary perspectives and provides greater flexibility to students. The certificate is intended to a) encourage current and future graduate students to deepen their training in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, b) document and highlight the expertise of current graduate students who are already engaged in a course of study with substantial Latin American Caribbean content, and c) allow non-matriculated students, who do not have the time or money to pursue a graduate degree, to earn a recognized credential demonstrating their expertise in Latin America for the purposes of employment or personal interests. The Graduate Certificate in Latin American Caribbean Studies requires 12 credits completed through 4 courses at the 500-level and above. Three tracks are available for students: the general Latin American Caribbean Studies Certificate (new), or specialized tracks in Central American Mexican Studies or Brazilian Studies. Graduate students interested in broad training on Latin America and the Caribbean or in a Latin American or Caribbean region other than Central America, Mexico, and Brazil may complete the new, general certificate in Latin American Caribbean Studies.
