The Graduate Certificate in Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) is an interdisciplinary program, involving multiple departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, which provides a specialized concentration focusing on Latin America and Latinos in the United States. This Certificate is directed primarily at graduate students whose intended academic and or professional careers in research, teaching, and public or private sectors incorporate a focus on the geographical and cultural region of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the populations of Latin American and Caribbean descent living in the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world. A) LAS 601 Interdisciplinary Seminar in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino a Studies: This is a required course for the Certificate. Any student enrolled in a graduate program at Vanderbilt is eligible to apply for the Certificate in Latino and Latina Studies.

The LATS graduate certificate will examine this enduring and dynamic population that crosses and re-crosses borders constructed by geography, linguistics, class, race, and gender. Students pursuing a LATS graduate certificate are expected to obtain language competence in Spanish before completing the program, though they do not need to meet this requirement when applying for the certificate. Any student enrolled in a graduate program at Vanderbilt is eligible to apply for the Certificate in Latino and Latina Studies. Graduate courses successfully completed at Vanderbilt University prior to admission to the program may be counted toward the certificate requirements with the approval of the director of the program. Students wishing to enroll must complete an Intent to Enroll form, which must be signed by the student, the director of the LATS Certificate Program, and the director of the Graduate Program (DGS) for the degree program in which the student is enrolled. A certificate in Latino and Latina Studies is awarded with either the M.A. or Ph.D. degree upon fulfillment of the following requirements: (1) Completion of at least 12 (MA) or 15 (PH.D) credit hours of interrelated course work across two or disciplines. Up to six credit hours of specifically named required courses from a student’s primary degree program may count toward the certificate.

Graduate Students at the University of Kentucky have the opportunity to earn a Graduate Certificate in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino a Studies. This Certificate is directed primarily at graduate students whose intended academic and or professional careers in research, teaching, and public or private sectors incorporate a focus on the geographical and cultural region of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the populations of Latin American and Caribbean descent living in the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world. To be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino a Studies, the student must successfully complete four courses amounting to 12 graduate credit hours with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. A) LAS 601 Interdisciplinary Seminar in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino a Studies: This is a required course for the Certificate.
