The Field of Asian Literature, Religion and Culture offers students interested in pursuing advanced studies of the literature, culture, religion(s), and intellectual history of any given region in East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Students are required to take, for credit, twelve to fourteen courses (six or seven during the first year) and complete an M.A. thesis by the end of the second year. Students who wrote an M.A. thesis (in English) in their major subject before matriculation at Cornell may request a waiver of the thesis requirement. Each student then chooses three areas of specialization (usually two in the major discipline and one in another literature, theoretical field, or a different discipline) and chooses one faculty member to represent each concentration.

The Literature Department fosters innovative and experimental work across historical periods, languages, approaches, and media. Our graduate curriculum is designed to give students maximum flexibility in constructing their fields of research and to provide exposure to cultural production and theoretical work that is global in scope.

Students emerge from the graduate program with a distinctive intellectual and pedagogical flexibility.

M.A. students typically take two years to complete the degree, pursuing coursework alongside Ph.D. students, and are well prepared to continue in a doctoral program elsewhere. Normative time for the Ph.D. is seven years, with graduates going on to teach at institutions of higher learning across the world. Ph.D. students are required to be able to read proficiently in at least two languages integral to their intellectual work, one of which may be English. Students create their own programs of study, producing dissertations on a range of comparative, translingual, and interdisciplinary projects. (See list of recent titles.).

The Literature at UCSC is affiliated with a range of university programs and research centers (The Center for Cultural Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Jewish Studies, The Dickens Project). Students may receive a designated emphasis on their doctoral degree in the following programs: Anthropology, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Education, Feminist Studies, History of Consciousness, Latin American and Latino Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology, and Visual Studies. The graduate program in literature brings together scholars, creative writers and translators who share a commitment to transnational and interdisciplinary approaches to literary study and practice. The PhD in literature provides students with a flexible context in which to pursue research across a wide range of literary traditions, critical approaches and theoretical debates. In addition to coursework in literary studies, students have the opportunity to participate in creative writing and or literary translation workshops as well as seminars in other disciplines, such as film studies, the history of ideas, philosophy and the visual and performing arts.

Students pursuing the PhD in literature may, if their coursework supports it, submit a translation or creative writing project as part of their dissertation.

Graduates of the program seek positions such as: teacher educator, writer, editor, publisher, translator and critic. Career settings may include higher education, nonprofits, cultural and historical organizations, publishing houses, government agencies, international development organizations, museums and archives, business corporate entities and independent consulting.

The exam portion of the Duolingo English Test contains a series of speaking, reading, writing and listening exercises. Following the exam, there will be an interview portion that will ask you to respond to various prompts in 30 to 90 seconds.
