At the graduate level, PRISM offers a multidisciplinary program in cooperation with academic departments. The MSE program emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the study of materials and the engineering application of their properties. There are two application paths available for certain doctoral programs. The M.S .and Ph.D. granting Materials Science Graduate Program addresses several areas of materials science research. Included in these areas are alloy science, biomaterials, corrosion science, crystal science, dental materials, metallurgy, and polymer science.

Note: Materials Chemistry program is not admitting students for the 2021-2022 academic year at this time. Bachelors degree: All graduate applicants must hold an earned baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or the recognized equivalent from an international institution. The minimum GPA is a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate coursework undertaken. Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced or Duolingo English Test are required of all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, whose native language is not English or who have been educated in countries where English is not the native language.

At all three universities, the interdisciplinary PhD program in Materials Science draws on various colleges and academic divisions. At UA, the program is supported by departments in both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. At UAB, the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Optometry are involved, as are the School of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences. At UAH, the College of Engineering and the College of Science participate in the program.

The discipline of materials science is inherently interdisciplinary, involving fundamental aspects of chemistry, physics, biology, geoscience, agricultural science, mathematics, and engineering. Reflecting this character, the materials science program at Oregon State University, initiated in the 1980s, is spread over nine different departments spanning three colleges. This allows students to earn M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials science in many different areas of concentration, including all classes of materials, and in a wide range of materials behavior. The course work requirements are extremely flexible to allow students to tailor their program of study to directly support their research activities.
