The goal of Mathematics and Statistics program is to increase the number of PhD’s awarded in mathematics at Penn to members of groups that are traditionally underrepresented. After fulfilling the requirements for the MA degree in Mathematics, a graduate student takes a variety of advanced courses offered by the department and, in some cases, by certain related departments. While the program is open to all eligible students, the university expect that at least initially it will be most popular among students working in CS Theory, Discrete Mathematics, and Mathematical Logic. Each student in Mathematics and Statistics program will have a primary program All applications for Mathematics and Statistics program should be submitted directly to the Yale Graduate School Office of Admissions through the online application page.

The graduate program in applied mathematics is based on a solid foundation in pure mathematics, which includes the fundamentals of algebra and analysis. It involves a grounding in the methods of applied mathematics and studies of scientific areas in which significant applications of mathematics are made. The dissertation is normally a mathematical contribution toward the solution of a problem arising outside mathematics. Applicants are required to submit GRE general test scores, and are advised to submit GRE mathematics subject test scores.
