These courses are concentrated in five emphasis areas: (1) dynamics and controls (2) design and manufacturing (3) mechanics and materials (4) mechatronic systems engineering and (5) thermofluids and energy. Educational efforts are channeled to expand the skills of prospective and practicing engineers not only in understanding fundamentals but also in developing competence in analyzing engineering systems. The department offers graduate degrees at the master engineer and doctorate levels, as well as certificates.

The Mechanical and Aerospace graduate programs are designed to educate students with the following Graduate Core Competencies.

CC 1: Apply advanced concepts of mechanical engineering, mathematics, and science. CC 2: Solve complex mechanical engineering problems. CC 3: Adapt to changing technology and new advances in the field of Mechanical Engineering. CC 4: Understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.

RC 1: Conduct independent research with modern tools and contemporary knowledge. RC 2: Communicate and generate technical written reports of original content and of the highest quality.

These courses are concentrated in five emphasis areas:.

The Master program in Aerospace Engineering (MSAE) is a two-year program targeted at students with an engineering or science background who want to pursue a career in the aerospace industry, government, or academia. Students will learn to synthesize and design aerospace systems through coursework and research activities.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is conferred by the School of Engineering primarily in recognition of competence in the subject field and the ability to investigate engineering problems independently, resulting in a new contribution to knowledge in the field.

Certificate programs are designed to provide an intensive background in a focused area at the graduate level. With 16-20 required units for completion, each certificate is designed to be completed in a much shorter period of time.

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management that focuses on design, integrate, and manage complex systems over their life cycles. The program is evolving so check back again soon for updates!

Working professionals may be able to take most classes online without applying to the University.

To obtain the certificate, students must complete 15 credit hours of approved course work with a 3.0 GPA or higher and minimum B grade in the certificate courses. The course work is made up of 9 hours of core courses, and 6 hours of electives. The 3 core courses provide engineers with a basic understanding of systems engineering and the ability to develop, analyze, and model systems of all kinds. The electives allow students to choose related courses of interest from a variety of departments from across the University.

Pass the following 2 courses with a grade of B or better (currently special topics courses).

(3) Fundamentals of Systems Engineering (Spring and Fall).

This course provides an of the science of systems engineering, and an introduction to the systems approach and methodological framework for creation and re-engineering of large-scale systems and processes. The student will develop an understanding of the larger context in which requirements for a system are developed, and learn trade-offs between developing mission needs or market opportunities first (versus accessing available technology first).Techniques for translating needs and priorities into an operational concept and then into specific functional and performance requirements will be presented. The student will develop an understanding of risk management techniques and the circumstances where they are appropriately employed. Fall 2021 Fundamentals Syllabus.

(3) Systems Engineering and Integration (Fall 2021 Spring 22).

This course provides the student with an understanding of the context and framework for carrying out a systems engineering project and the system-level responsibilities of a systems engineer, through hands-on activity. Topics covered include systems design and development, system test and evaluation, system reliability, system maintainability, human factors and system design, system producibility and supportability, balancing life-cycle cost, schedule, suitability and performance, risk management, and systems engineering project management and control. Types of systems considered will range from small-scale to large-scale and from primarily technical to primarily social-political. Fall 2021 Systems Integration Syllabus.

Three hours in selected Planning or Production of Systems course (3 hours).

Note: Cross listed courses only count toward fulfilling one requirement.
