The Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM), an interdisciplinary graduate center, educates leaders who foster, explore, and study engagement with the sacred through music, worship, and the arts in Christian communities, diverse religious traditions, and public life. Partnering with the Yale School of Music and YDS, as well as other academic and professional units at Yale, ISM prepares its students for careers in church music and other sacred music, pastoral ministry, performance, and scholarship. With a core focus on Christian sacred music, ISM builds bridges among disciplines and vocations and makes creative space for scholarship, performance, and practice.
Students admitted to ISM are also admitted to either the Yale School of Music or YDS (or both), from which they receive their degrees. ISM students are eligible for a full-tuition scholarship and have the opportunity to compete for additional grants and merit awards. Students pursuing music degrees receive rigorous conservatory training in choral conducting, organ, or voice, and typically go on to careers in church music, public performance, or teaching.
Upon graduation, students enrolled in both ISM and YDS earn an ISM certificate in addition to their Yale degree. For example, music students will learn the theological and liturgical roots of the sacred music they perform. They study the historical context and meanings of the texts used, and they learn the modern contexts in which this repertoire appears, whether in liturgies or on the concert stage. Likewise, divinity students learn to make connections between theological concepts and artistic expression. They look at the historical roots and aesthetic constructions of the art and liturgies they study.

Each fall, theatre, dance and performance studies students audition for a coveted spot in the Music Theatre Certificate program.
Students who are admitted to the program on the basis of their vocal and dance auditions develop the versatile performance skills demanded by this specialized art form. Students take specialized courses in music theatre techniques, as well as acting, voice, musicianship and dance. Students also study the history and creation of music theatre.
Alumni of Northwestern and the Music Theatre Certificate program can be seen on Broadway and in national tours of hit productions.
If you are applying to the Northwestern University School of Communication Theatre Major and are interested in pursuing admittance to the Northwestern University Music Theatre Certificate Program, you are encouraged to submit an optional Music Theatre Supplement.

The Certificate in Music Theatre provides the opportunity for School of Communication students majoring in theatre, dance, or performance studies and Bienen School of Music students majoring in voice to create a second area of specialization that is important to their development as musical theatre artists.
Program requirements specify that students must take and pass 9 specific THEATER and DANCE courses: 3 Applied Voice courses, 3 Music Theatre Techniques courses, 2 Theatre courses and 1 Dance sequence. (Different courses are required for voice students from Bienen School of Music.).
Students must remain in the theatre, dance, performance studies, or voice major to remain in the Music Theatre Certificate Program students who leave an eligible major for a noneligible one will be required to leave the program.

For composers, these courses will be chosen from a limited number of carefully selected classes that are offered throughout the university in music theory, music cognition, sound synthesis, recording, and related areas.
These may include performance projects, research projects in the area of composition and any other approved area of study. Or, students may propose to enroll in a relevant class chosen from the existing School of Music or University class schedule.
Orchestral Performance majors are required to participate in School of Music ensembles.
These courses provide students with an array of activities related to performance and professional development that are only partially covered by their regular studio lessons. They can include Literature and Repertoire courses and Chamber Music courses.
These may include performance projects, research projects, and any other approved area of study. Or, students may propose to enroll in a relevant class chosen from the existing School of Music or University class schedule.
Students will participate in a Chamber Music group as assigned during each semester.
These courses provide students with an array of activities related to performance and professional development that are only partially covered by their regular studio lessons. They can include Literature and Repertoire courses and additional Chamber Music courses.
The Advanced Music Studies Certificate in Audio Recording and Production centers around the Vlahakis Recording studio and the concert hall. Students in this program learn the art and science of studio recording in many musical genres jazz, hip-hop, singer-songwriter, rock, contemporary classical music and recording live opera and symphonic music in the concert hall.
Students can enroll in additional classes in music or any other area university-wide that contribute to academic and career goals (prerequisites may be required for some courses).
Editing and mastering of these events will be specifically for radio broadcast. The concert hall projects could include recording and sound reinforcement for regularly scheduled ensemble concerts in on and off-campus venues, working in conjunction with the School of Music Recording Engineer and the recording crew.
These courses will be chosen from a limited number of carefully selected classes that are offered throughout the university in music, audio, video, and related areas. They can include Supervised Recording Teaching.

A real time technical education capitalizing on the responsibilities, opportunities, and misfortunes that happen during the care of 80 pianos in a very active school of music. The curriculum is divided into classroom study, private one-on-one lessons, and a group extended practicum every week. Graduating students can demonstrate fundamental tuning skills as well as a base knowledge of regulation, voicing, rebuilding etc.
Students will take courses in the tuning and servicing of vertical and grand pianos, acoustics, business, history, and practicums in the direct application of piano maintenance techniques, including tuning, repair, and rebuilding.

Train for a career as a Tonmeister, a role in which you will supervise both technical and artistic personnel during the production of music, sound recordings, and live broadcasting, and work in many areas of music and sound production, including record production, radio, film, education, and product design. The Tonmeister Advanced Certificate course at NYU Music Technology is for students who have already earned a master degree in music technology and or recording.
You will also develop a specialization in Tonmeister Studies through courses in technology and theory, and an internship.
Producing classical music is the primary focus, although other genres of acoustic and electro-acoustic music field, including modern classical, jazz, world, rock, and folk music.
You can usually complete this Advanced Certificate program in one year, including a summer session.
You must demonstrate a substantial background in music theory, recording technology, electronics, and acoustics. If your primary instrument is not piano, you must demonstrate basic piano skills and be able to read and transpose directly from a concert score. An entrance portfolio of recorded works and an interview will be required to demonstrate technical know-how, prior music production experience, and commitment to the recording arts.
Most students studying on F-1 visas will be eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) off-campus work authorization. F-1 students in our program may also be eligible for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) OPT extension, allowing you to extend your time in the United States to pursue degree-related work experience for a total of 36 months or 3 years.
David Allen Moore graduated Summa Cum Laude from the USC Thornton School of Music in 1993 where he studied with Dennis Trembly, Paul Ellison, and John Clayton. Moore performed as a substitute with the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the 1995-96 season, after which he was a member of the Houston Symphony bass section under maestro Christoph Eschenbach, from 1996 to 1999.
Moore has participated in numerous festivals including Tanglewood, the Grand Teton Music Festival, Mainly Mozart, and Kent Blossom Summer Music Festival. He was also a featured clinician at the 1999 Texas Double Bass Symposium.
In 2007, he began studies with internationally renowned double bass pedagogue and soloist François Rabbath in Paris. Moore received both the Diploma and Teaching Certificate from the Institut International Rabbath in February of 2009.
