At the intersection of the creation, performance, and study of music. Our graduate program invites students to earn a Ph.D. in composition or musicology, advancing their craft and research within the inspiring interdisciplinary, immersive spirit of the Princeton University campus. As an extension of this integrative approach, graduate students can also apply for a joint doctoral degree through the Interdisciplinary Humanities program. The program embraces many kinds of musics, engaging with diverse musical languages and creative practices.

Practice Rooms, Instrument Lockers, and Music Department Spaces. Sixteen 4-credit courses are required, and at least fourteen are usually taken during the first two years. Musicology students must take two courses in ethnomusicology and two courses in either theory or composition. Ethnomusicology students are required to take at least two courses in musicology, two courses in offerings outside the department, and at least two courses in music theory.

M.A.R. students in the ISM prepare themselves for a variety of careers: teaching, work in arts-related organizations, or other kinds of lay ministries. Many also go on for further doctoral work in music, art history, literature, or liturgy. Alternatively, they may be admitted to a concentration in either. The program in Religion and the Arts provides enrichment to all students in YDS and ISM.

The Music offers programs in Musicology (MA leading to MPhil and PhD) and in Composition (MA leading to DMA). The Musicology program incorporates three areas: historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory. Within these areas, research and teaching focus on a wide range of topics, including music history in the West, non-Western musics and cultures, popular and urban musics, jazz, analytical methods, music cognition, music aesthetics, and the philosophy of music. Application is made to one of these areas, each of which has its own degree requirements.

This is a small, collegial department with individualized curricula. The approach is interdisciplinary, emphasizing the study of music history, theory, ethnomusicology, and performance within the framework of cultural and intellectual history, as well as original composition. Students are encouraged to include work outside their main area of concentration in their degree programs. Each year the department sponsors a series of concerts which, added to the other concert offerings by Duke, neighboring institutions, and arts organizations has created a rich music life in the community.

The Bienen School of Music distinctive PhD program is structured to take full advantage of the many and varied academic opportunities available at Northwestern University. Specializations are offered in composition and music technology, music theory and cognition, music education, and musicology. Students in this integrated program design a course of study incorporating their individual interests and a broad-based approach to contemporary music research. A unique aspect of this program is a cognate area requirement in a non-music field such as cultural studies, social sciences, learning sciences, humanities, arts, or communication studies.

The Field of Music offers graduate degrees in three areas of study: music (Ph.D.), composition (D.M.A.), and performance practice (D.M.A.). Music at Cornell flourishes through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the fields of performance, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, composition, and music theory. The curriculum is highly flexible.

Students in the Ph.D. program in Music and Multimedia Composition produce, analyze, and perform original works that may include the use of electronic music, acoustic composition and sound in combination with video, performance, installation and text. They conduct advanced inquiry into the cultural, theoretical, technical and aesthetic issues surrounding music and multimedia production in close collaboration with faculty researchers strongly invested in real–time, interactive sonic and visual media, sound art, instrument design and acoustic composition.

The Master of Sacred Music Program purpose is to train professional musicians for work in Christian churches and to prepare those who desire it for the Doctorate in Musical Arts in performance or the PhD in music history, ethnomusicology or liturgics.
