Graduate Certificate Programs in Near and Middle Eastern Studies

The Certificate recognizes competency in the history, society, politics, and culture of the Middle East. Its award acknowledges substantial preparation in Middle East Studies, both in the student’s major graduate or professional field, and also in terms of the disciplinary and geographical diversity required to demonstrate expertise in the region as a whole. Graduate and Professional Students currently enrolled in an advanced degree at Yale are eligible to apply to this program.

The Council on Middle East Studies welcomes students to participate in its robust program of courses and extracurricular and research-related activities. As a federally recognized National Resource Center, the Council supports language study and research in the region with federal grants and other funds.

The Duke University Middle East Studies Center (DUMESC) coordinates the new Duke-UNC Graduate Certificate in Middle East Studies, a joint offering of the Consortium in Middle East Studies administered through the Asian and Middle East Studies at Duke and the Religious Studies at UNC. The Certificate is open to students in any graduate department, program, or professional school at Duke University and UNC-CH who are engaged with the study of the Middle East.

The Duke University Middle East Studies Center is a hub for research, education, and outreach the Middle East that serves as a world forum at the local, national, and international levels. We prepare tomorrow leaders by equipping them with knowledge Middle Eastern languages, cultures, and societies. Our Center is distinguished by its transregional approach, which treats the Middle East as a unit extending from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean and emphasizes interdisciplinarity, comparativity, and connectivity.

In addition to the Certificate Core Course, students must take three other graduate courses on a topic related to the Middle East.

The Five College certificate program in Middle Eastern studies is an opportunity for students to complement a disciplinary major with multidisciplinary studies and linguistic attainments.

In addition to exploring the range of courses offered at the Five Colleges, students are encouraged to spend time in the Middle East, learning Arabic and other languages and immersing themselves in the culture of the area. Students must receive a grade of B or better in every course counted toward the certificate.

The certificate in Middle Eastern and Islamic studies provides students the opportunity to formally explore the cultural, political and religious diversity of the Middle East and the Islamic worlds. Students learn the many countries that make up the region while also exploring the birthplace of the three major monotheistic faiths. Students complete the certificate with knowledge of the rich literary, architectural and religious traditions of the area.

Get involved with many student associations on campus such as the Saudi Student Association, the Middle Eastern Student Association, the Persian Students Organization and the Arab Student Association.

This certificate allows you enter the workforce with an understanding of the Middle East within a historical, cultural and political context.

Students will take a mix of language and content courses:.

One year of required Arabic or Farsi courses.

Note: Students cannot declare both the Certificate in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and the Minor in Arabic Studies.

Eligible courses contain at least 50% Middle East or North African content at the time they were taken and must result in a regular grade (A,B,C,D,E).

Spring 2020 exception: students could choose the Pass Fail option for courses that normally receive regular grades. All of these P-graded courses will count towards certificate credit hours but not towards the GPA.

A minimum of 9 eligible credit hours must be in non-language courses.

An E-graded course will not count towards the minimum number of credit hours but will count towards the GPA.

A course taken than once will only be considered eligible for the certificate one time unless the two courses are on distinctly different topics (e.g. special topics courses).

Students are allowed to retake a course in which they performed poorly the higher graded course will be used in certificate calculations.

Course eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

After CMES verifies student eligibility (after graduation), the student will be sent a link to a questionnaire. The certificate is not issued automatically the questionnaire must be completed. The information provided helps CMES ensure the continuation of its federal funding. We use the information to generate statistics University of Arizona graduates with interests in Middle Eastern Studies.

This is not an official university-approved certificate and will not be noted on your transcript however, you may add it to your resume CV. Earning a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies from the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, a U.S. Education Title VI National Resource Center, and one of only 11 in the country focused on the Middle East and North Africa, is a notable achievement.

The transferring of credit or the substitution of courses may occur only after application to the appropriate campus authority.

The Middle East and greater Muslim World are the most significant and consequential regions shaping contemporary world politics and dynamics. Strong knowledge of the Middle East and Muslim World is a major asset to graduates seeking employment in governmental institutions, the private sector or in academia.

The Graduate Certificate in Middle East and Muslim World Studies, which is offered through the Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Center for Muslim World Studies at the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, provides students with the opportunity for a rich multidisciplinary learning experience, with a choice of courses in the fields of international relations, political science, history, religious studies, geography, sociology anthropology, global cultural studies, and modern languages, among others. The Certificate also provides an of the Muslim experience in the West. This Certificate program is open to degree seeking students only.

A total of 18 credit hours of graduate course work, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a grade of C or higher in all courses applied toward certificate requirements.

The certificate will provide students with a deeper understanding of the historical, cultural, social, and political environment in the Middle East. It will offer a foundation for graduate work that prepares students as they pursue their work as scholars and or professionals of Middle Eastern Studies.

The certificate will help students prepare and tackle job opportunities in business, government, and the nonprofit sector related to the Middle East and or immigrants from the region.
