The School of Nursing offers Post-Master’s Certificates in Nursing Practice in the following areas: Adult Gerontology Acute Care, Adult Gerontology Primary Care, and Neonatal Care. These certificates are appropriate for master’s prepared nurses who wish to pursue graduate level study in a track different from their Master of Science (M.S.) degree. Post-Master’s Certificate graduates are prepared as advance practice nurses to assess, diagnose, monitor, treat and coordinate care of acutely and critically ill individuals from adolescence to senescence. Graduates of this concentration are prepared to apply for eligibility to take the AGACNP certification examination prepared by an approved national organization as accepted by the Board of Registration in Nursing and apply to practice in the expanded role in Connecticut or other states based on regulatory guidelines. Post-Master’s Certificate graduates are prepared as advance practice nurses to assess, diagnose, monitor, treat and coordinate care of individuals from adolescence to senescence with common acute and chronic conditions within the context of family and community. Graduates of this track are prepared to apply for eligibility to take the AGNP Primary Care certification examination prepared by an approved national organization as accepted by the Board of Registration in Nursing and apply to practice in the expanded role in Connecticut or other states based on regulatory guidelines. Purdue offers a certificate in each nurse practitioner program for students who already hold an MSN. Depending on the student previous advanced practice specialty and the program selected, the certificate may be completed in as little as eight months. The certificate courses include primary care theory courses, practice-focused clinical courses, and an intensive preceptorship experience. The Family NP Certificate program requires that students have completed an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) graduate educational program from a nationally accredited school of nursing. After acceptance, but before admission to the School of Nursing, students in all programs must be able to document current certification evidence of completion of a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for healthcare providers. This requires being able to successfully complete both the written and practical test for certification.

Students desiring to teach at the collegiate level are eligible to complete an additional four classes (12 credits) in nursing education. These courses can be added to either Doctor of Nursing Practitioner concentration or to a bridge program or can be taken as a standalone post-master certificate.
