Those who earn a doctoral degree as an Adult-Gerontological Primary Care or a Family Primary Care Nurse Practitioner with the HIV Primary Care Certificate, will have the opportunity to obtain national certification by taking the Advanced AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (AACRN) examination through membership in the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care.

Graduates are eligible for the FNP certification exam administered by AANP or ANCC. To be considered for the post-master certificate, applicants must:. Active state license and certification to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse at program start. Students in the post-master certificate programs at UVA are ineligible for scholarship assistance or student loans. University aid is restricted to those who are enrolled in degree programs (MSN, DNP, PhD, etc). Full-time students begin study in the fall, and complete the FNP post-master certificate in two years, including summer session in year 1. In the first year, the full-time student has didactic classes on Thursdays and Fridays (in the fall and spring). In the second year, the didactic component is on Thursday, and clinical practica are generally Monday to Wednesday, or as the individual schedule allows. The academic history of other advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) will be examined on a case-by-case basis. Any of the 3 Ps not showing on the applicant’s transcript will need to be completed in order to receive a post-master’s certificate.

The Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certificate program is available for Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) graduates who would like to gain further knowledge in advanced practice psychiatric mental health nursing. The program can be completed in one year of full-time study. Nursing Practitioner prepares graduates to function independently and collaboratively with healthcare team members to provide comprehensive and integrative psychiatric mental health care to those in need of psychiatric services, as well as those who are at risk of psychiatric experiences. Graduates are eligible to take the PMHNP certification exam offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as well as various state licensure certification exams where available. Students who are APRN’s and have had the 3 P’s (Patho, Pharm and Advanced Physical Assessment) will only need a few courses before starting the clinical sequence. A successful applicant to the Certificate program will have a completed application consisting of all transcripts, two letters of reference, a CV and a goals statement. Psych experience is preferred, but we will review all files to make sure they are a good fit for University of Massachusetts-Amherst program. There is no financial aid for certificate programs as the Certificate is non-degree seeking, but you can contact Financial Aid to see if they have information on private loans for post graduate students.
