Graduates from the health-related science fields are entering a research arena or work force where an understanding of complex interactions between nutrition, human physiology, and physical activity are required. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created a Division of “Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity” to specifically target the roles of physical activity/exercise and nutrition on important obesity-related health issues. In September 2011, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics announced the development of Individualized Supervised Practice Pathways or ISPPs ( ispeys ) which are intended to add supervised practice capacity through ACEND-accredited dietetics programs, while providing student protections missing from the unaccredited models of the past. Programs that host ISPPs must be accredited in good standing by ACEND and must assure compliance with ACEND accreditation standards including those addressing supervised practice. Pepperdine has recently been approved by ACEND to provide ISPPs.
In addition, one must have submitted an acceptable application in the past 5 years to DICAS through a previous national match and been unmatched to any supervised practice program.
In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited ISPP program at Pepperdine University are eligible to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.

The 14-unit online Graduate Certificate in Applied Nutrition (GCAN) provides knowledge and skills in the area of clinical nutrition. Students will train in advanced nutritional sciences, and the certificate will prepare graduates to successfully compete for jobs in the nutrition workforce and enhance their placement into graduate or professional training programs.

This course will introduce the concepts of research methods with a focus on the varied research conducted in nutritional sciences. Students will be guided through a comprehensive compendium of the elements of research design in order to understand the application of these elements to Applied Nutritional Science.
NSC 502: Statistics for Applied Nutritional Sciences II.
This course will introduce basic statistical concepts and applied statistical strategies that are essential for conducting and critiquing research in nutritional sciences and related fields. The course will be delivered online structured with video lectures, self-check practices, discussion forum, assignments and quizzes.
This course will advance understanding of research design, methods, and implementation, interpretation of research findings, and advances in nutrition science research for selected chronic diseases.
This course focuses on providing medical nutrition therapy for select complex acute and chronic diseases. The course is based on students participating in an in-depth examination and discussion on each topic using an evidence-based approach and related research.
