The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency is a 6-year program which awards a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) in conjunction with the Jacobs School of Medicine as well as a Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The University at Buffalo Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery provides the full-scope of resident training. There is an emphasis on the core principles, as well as experience and training in the broader and advanced aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This includes a rich experience in:.

Temporomandibular joint surgery including alloplastic total joint reconstruction.

Reconstruction of hard and soft tissue defects of the maxillofacial region.

The model of resident education at the University at Buffalo has always been one of independence and hands-on surgical training, with a strong emphasis on academics and evidence-based learning. The didactic aspect of the resident experience includes:.

Quarterly multidisciplinary conferences with the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology as well as the Orthodontics.

The new resident is expected to complete the USMLE Part 1 by the program start date.

The first-year resident will primarily work in the Erie County Medical Center and The School of Dental Medicine clinics.

Supervise and instruct 3rd and 4th-year dental students in the School of Dental Medicine oral surgery clinics.

The third-year resident will continue with their class and graduate medical school with the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Spring.

Complete the General Surgery Rotation in the early Fall as a PGY-1 until the end of the 4th year.

The fifth-year resident will rotate between the Erie County Medical Center and the School of Dental Medicine clinics.

Supervise and instruct 3rd and 4th year dental students in the School of Dental Medicine oral surgery clinics.

The sixth-year resident will be the Chief Resident and will be integral in the coordination of the lower-level residents, as well as everyday operations of the program.

Rotate between the Erie County Medical Center and the School of Dental Medicine clinics.
