Best Periodontics/Periodontology graduate certificate programs - Updated 2022

The 36 months of the CAGS-only program are devoted to pursuit of a clinical certificate in Periodontology through 3 years of uninterrupted clinical experiences and didactic courses. The first year starts with didactic instruction that provides in-depth training in all areas of minimal, moderate, and deep sedation, as well as clinical training to level of competency in adult minimal, enteral, and moderate parenteral sedation. The first year will also include clinical periodontology and related coursework. The second year continues with moderate IV sedation training, implant support crown restoration, clinical medical sciences, periodontal microsurgery, treatment planning, implantology, oral medicine, and oral implantology.

Course and a tuition fee is required to attend. Observers do not receive graduate school credit but will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the program. The observership follows the exact schedule of the periodontics residency program, and observers attend all classes seminars that residents attend. Clinical activities are limited to assisting and observing, while residents provide direct care to patients.

The Periodontology and Oral Implantology graduate program accepts four applicants per academic year. Applicants should have a DDS or DMD degree from an accredited dental school, according to the standards of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Preference is given to applicants with one or years of clinical practice experience or completion of a General Practice Residency or an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. Applicants should have advanced degrees in basic science and or biomedical fields, contributions to scientific publications, and research experience and training.

In this three-year advanced education program, residents learn all facets of periodontics and dental implant therapy, including biomedical sciences, patient evaluation, diagnosis of periodontal and other oral diseases, interdisciplinary treatment planning, non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment, and dental implant therapy. The Advanced Education Program in Periodontics comprises didactic, clinical, and research experiences leading to a certificate in periodontics.
