The Physical Therapy Human Movement Sciences, in coordination with the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, offers a unique dual-degree program that awards graduates a doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) from the Feinberg School of Medicine as well as a PhD from the McCormick School of Engineering and The Graduate School. This dual-degree program marries two disciplines for one clear benefit: improved rehabilitation therapies and technologies for patients with movement disorders.

Graduates from the DPT PhD program are expected to become new leaders in engineering, rehabilitation sciences, physical therapy and device development for the study and restoration of human function in the academic, governmental, healthcare and industry environments Their scientific and engineering contributions will be relevant to physical therapist patient care, making a significant impact on rehabilitation-related healthcare costs.

Applicants to the program should hold or be pursuing a degree in engineering or related quantitative discipline. Applicants are required to apply to each program separately, and acceptance into the dual degree program is contingent upon acceptance into both programs.

The DPT PhD program is based on a dual mentorship model where students receive advice from both an investigator focused on quantitative research and an investigator with experience in clinically applied research.

Three laboratory rotations starting in the winter quarter and required engineering graduate coursework. The rotations and coursework will be selected with the help of an appointed preceptor and graduate committee.

Dual mentors will be chosen by the student (one mentor with an engineering background one mentor with a clinical and biology background) with the assistance of the preceptor in the beginning of the fall. Students will continue their coursework and start their PhD research. Students in the BME program are expected to take the qualifier exam for PhD candidacy at the end of the second year.

Through funding from an National Institutes of Health training grant, the department supports two new, qualified students entering the DPT PhD program per year. The training grant provides support (tuition and stipend) for up to two years during the PhD portion of the program. In addition, the Feinberg School of Medicine provides tuition support and a stipend for the DPT portion of the program. Supplementary funding for the first year is provided by McCormick School of Engineering and The Graduate School. Funding is limited to U.S. citizens and residents.

Physical therapists (PTs) are important members of the rehabilitation (rehab) team. They evaluate and provide treatment for persons with health problems and disabilities caused by injury, disease, overuse of muscles or tendons, pain, or loss of a body part.

PTs have either a master degree or a doctorate from a school accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association. To practice, all graduates must be licensed by their state by passing a national certification exam.

In addition to submitting an online application, the following items are required to be considered for admission to the PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences program:.

Section of the application. Applicants receiving a degree from a college or university located outside of the United States must also submit a formal course-by-course evaluation of all non-US transcripts from a third-party verification organization such as World Education Services (WES) directly to Sargent College.

If you are admitted to the program and choose to enroll, you will then be asked to submit official copies of all transcripts prior to matriculation. All enrolled students must complete a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution prior to matriculation.

GRE scores are not required to program. Any GRE scores received by the program will not be considered by the admissions committee.

For international students whose first language is not English, official TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic scores are required unless you have completed a baccalaureate degree at an institution where the primary language of instruction is English. TOEFL iBT scores should be submitted electronically through ETS to BU using the institutional code 3087. IELTS Academic scores should be requested from IELTS to be released to Boston University Graduate Programs.

The minimum TOEFL iBT score for this program is 100, and the minimum IELTS Academic score is 7.
