The Master Program in Medical Physiology is fully online and designed for students with at least a bachelor degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science who are seeking advanced training in the physiological sciences, typically in preparation for admission to a professional medical program (e.g. Medical School, Dental School). The program is flexible in duration. It can take as little as 1 year (3 semesters including summer) to complete the required 32 credit hours of course work. However, students who wish to decompress the program can take 22 months or to complete the requirements. Core courses and flexible electives allow students to focus their work in key areas of medical physiology. Graduates of the Medical Physiology Master Program also can pursue careers in basic and clinical research, research administration, teaching or management in academia, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, private research institutions, government science or regulatory agencies, or medicine and health care.

For graduate policies and procedures, please review the School of Graduate Studies section of the General Bulletin.

This is a 5 credit, 15 week (approximately 55 lectures) self-paced course which examines the cellular and organ systems of Medical Physiology for Distance Education. The tuition will be assessed at the College of Medicine tuition rate. Students must register for the online course by going to the MyUI site at the University of Iowa (non-UI students go HERE) to enroll.

The course can be completed in less than 15 weeks depending upon the completion of each exam but not to extend beyond one semester (15 weeks). The course is delivered using online streaming audio and video of lectures, syllabus, as well as PowerPoint slide presentations, all available on ICON (Iowa Courses Online). Response time for questions will normally be within 48 hours.

The fundamental principles of cellular membranes, muscle, sensory organs, motor neurological systems, autonomic nervous systems, cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and reproductive systems are covered. The interdependence of organ systems to maintain a normal physiological state will be emphasized using clinical correlates as applied to humans. The goal of the course is to provide basic physiological principles that establish a solid foundation for future pathophysiological and pharmacological concepts. There are five section examinations covering nine general organ systems and a comprehensive final exam. Grades are determined by the percentage of points earned from the exams (100% from section exams). The course is appropriate for medical, dental, physician assistant, nurse anesthesia, physical therapy, and graduate students.

5 Reasons Why Medical Students Should Pursue a Master of Science.

Course Format: This online course is tailored for asynchronous distance learners.

Medical Renal Physiology (GMS6401) teaches the functions of the renal system of human body at a level required for clinical medicine and basic research in medical physiology. The course covers normal physiology, as well as selected diseases. Concepts are taught using a combination of lectures, online workshops and online problem sets. The workshops are designed to help the student understand the integration of renal physiology with genetics, genomics, molecular biology and cellular physiology as a basis for a better understanding of human disease. skills in evaluating clinical situations.

For example, this course is designed to provide critical knowledge for individuals who wish to teach renal physiology at the secondary and post-secondary levels. However, this course will also provide a foundation for students who are wishing to attain or enhance knowledge of medical renal physiology.

This course requires a BA or BS and a strong science foundation with at least 5 full semester courses related to biology, chemistry and or physics. Co-enrollment or prior passing grade in GMS 6440 is required for enrollment in this class.

Jaya Kolli, M.D., Lecturer, Physiology and Functional Genomics.

This is a self-paced course that is offered in the spring, fall and summer.

Physiology is the science of how the body functions and is the basis for understanding modern clinical medicine and the biomedical sciences. This course will provide: 1) a foundational understanding of the basic functions of the kidney 2) integration of individual facts in order to understand how organ systems work independently and interdependently in the body. One example of this integration is in the understanding of the aging kidney.
