The Master of Public Administration program in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the Master of Business Administration program in the Walton College of Business are working together to offer the Cross Sector Alliance graduate certificate program. The program prepares students for a workplace in which they will be interacting with organizations from other sectors in joint projects or initiatives. Accordingly, students must understand the financial, accountability and general management challenges of the different sectors. In addition, the program also prepares students for work in different sectors and builds skills not addressed in stand-alone programs. The Cross Sector Alliances certificate was a great complement to my MPA program. This knowledge has been a great asset to my current position within a public agency that focuses on economic activity within the state. This knowledge allows me to understand the perspectives of business managers and developers I work with and better respond to their concerns and challenges.

The methods curriculum for the POIR program includes two options. One option, which is being phased out, is the certification in quantitative methods. This is only available to students who entered the program prior to fall 2018 and the other is in declaring methods as an examined or third field. The courses needed to specialize in methods cannot take away from the student’s intentions to enroll in substantive courses, which are central to graduate training. For those choosing methods as a field, the methods field courses will ideally be taken by students in their first two years. Students pursuing the certificate may continue taking these courses in their third year, as they pursue advanced training relevant to their dissertation projects. Certificate in Social Science Research Methods. This certificate would be awarded to students who complete the three methods core courses and three additional, advanced electives. Students must meet certain standards within the courses and meet the course curriculum and GPA requirement (3.5 or higher in POIR B or higher in Economics courses). Please consult Graduate Advisor Veri Chavarin, Methods Field Coordinator James Lo, or POIR Director Benjamin Graham with questions for those students entering the program prior to fall 2018 eligible for this certificate.

The International Relations Certificate offers students an opportunity to pursue an interest in international affairs as a complement to their majors and shows graduate schools or future employers that they have a strong interest in world affairs. The Certificate is designed to encourage motivated students to develop a global perspective on the origins of the current international system, the salient concerns in international relations today, and the emerging challenges humanity will face in the years ahead. The Certificate encourages students to explore how global, regional, and domestic factors influence relations between actors on the world stage. Students are advised to make interdisciplinary connections between the complexities of numerous global challenges, such as competition among the great powers, nuclear proliferation, transnational terrorism, regional and ethnic conflict, migration, environmental degradation, demographic stress, global climate change, socioeconomic and cultural globalizations and wide disparities in global economic development. Earning the certificate requires demonstrating competence in a contemporary foreign language (four semesters of a single college-level contemporary foreign language) and earning at least a B in each of seven courses on world politics and institutions, the international economy, the history of the international system, US foreign policy, and the politics, history, economy, or culture of one or foreign areas. The courses listed in these sections of the IR Certificate program can be used to fulfill your International Relations Certificate. However, you may be able to take similar courses at the other four participating institutions or while studying abroad. There may be additional courses offered which fulfill your requirements during the academic year which do not appear in the printed catalog, but can be found in the on-line version of the course catalog. Please confer with Professor Javier Corrales, Pavel Machala, Eleonora Mattiacci, Ruxandra Paul or Kerry Ratigan in selecting such courses when trying to fulfill your requirements for the International Relations Certificate.
