Students take general education support courses that will enhance the understanding of the practical nursing courses in the classroom and the clinical setting. Graduates of the Practical Nursing program will be able to provide direct nursing care to individuals with common health needs within a structured healthcare setting under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or physician. Upon completion of the program, graduates are qualified to take the National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCLEX-PN) examination for practical nursing.

This course will introduce basic concepts and skills related to categories of normal human functioning including growth and development, selected alterations in categories of human functioning, nursing process, teaching learning and professional development related to the care of adult patients.

This course will expand your knowledge of health promotion of the young, middle and older adult, as well as the adaptation by the patient during acute and chronic illnesses. The selected alterations in categories of human function that will be studied include protect, sensory perceptual, nutrition and elimination, growth and development and fluid-gas transport.

In this course, you will address issues that have broad implications in the practice of nursing for licensed practical nurses. As a manager of care for selected patients, you will address principles related to coordination of care, prioritization, evidence-based practice and quality improvement.

In this course, you will study selected classes of drugs, which includes: names, uses, mechanism of actions, systemic effects, adverse effects, compatibilities, contraindications and nursing implications.

In this course, you will address therapeutic and interdisciplinary communication concepts as well as the management of patients with normal psychosocial functioning and selected common psychiatric and behavioral conditions.

This course will focus on the concepts of nutrition therapy and help you to understand and apply nutrition therapy with nursing interventions to assist selected patients in adapting to alterations in human functioning and health.

In this course, you will address physiological integrity of individuals with acute and chronic diseases across the lifespan, with a focus on basic care and comfort, pharmacological and parenteral therapies and a reduction of risk potential.

In this course, you will focus on the initial skills needed to care for the patient. The clinical laboratory and long-term care will be used as practice settings.

In this course, you will focus on applying the skills needed to care for selected adult patients. The long-term care area will be used as the practice setting.

In this course, you will focus on applying the skills needed to care for selected adult patients. Long-term care with skilled units and acute hospital sites will be used as practice setting.

In this course, you will focus on applying the skills needed to care for selected patients across the life span from fertilization through young adult. Acute-care, clinics, daycares and schools will be used as practice settings.

In this course you will focus on applying the skills needed to act as manager of care for selected patients. The student will apply principles related to coordination of care and selected safety and infection control principles. Long term care facilities and clinics will be used as practice settings.

To earn your practical nursing certificate, you must take 35 credit hours of major program courses and seven credit hours of supporting courses.

After completing the PNC program at College of Saint Mary, graduates must apply for licensure and successfully complete the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The requirements for licensure may vary by state.

The practical nursing program has Nebraska State Board of Nursing approval.

PNC application reviews are done on a rolling basis, beginning June 1 for a May start date annually. To be accepted into the PNC program, all applicants must:.

High School graduate or GED with appropriate signatures.

If transferring in A P courses, they must have been successfully completed within the last 5 years.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic version with overall score of 6.5 and minimum score of 6.0 on all modules.

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) 55 overall with no sub scores lower than 50 in each scored part.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Special Needs Advancement Program.

Through the University of Central Missouri Certified Nursing Assistant-Special Needs Advancement certificate program, students are prepared for meaningful and exciting careers in the fast-growing healthcare field. In addition to classroom, lab and on-the-job experiences, students successfully completing the course will receive several industry-recognized certificates. The need for certified nursing assistants is expected to increase by 11 percent through 2026, according to the US Labor, with median annual salary at approximately $27,500. Through this program, students earn an industry-recognized certificate and continuing education units which may not be applied to a degree program and are not eligible for federal financial aid.

Learn the skills needed to succeed as a certified nursing assistant while gaining specialized expertise. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Industry Certificate creates a pathway for registered nurses (RN), who were formerly licensed practical nurses (LPN), to earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN). With this new certificate, students who graduated with a diploma from a practical nursing (PN) program, and passed the licensing exam, are awarded 16 college credits.

At BGSU we recognize the hard work that students put into their education and career. We honor these nurses by providing college credit for passing the NCLEX-PN.

The LPN Industry Certificate is provided to students who are enrolled in the online RN to BSN program.

Cohorts will begin depending upon enrollment and approvals from the associated state board of nursing. General admission to South College does not guarantee admission to the School of Nursing.

Submit a School of Nursing application by the applicable deadline.

Achieve a minimum ATI TEAS Assessment score at the academic preparedness level of BASIC.

The combined GPA of all four courses must be a 2.50 GPA. Courses may be in progress at time of application, but to be admitted without stipulation they must be completed.

Applicants who are not in good academic standing from a previous nursing or allied health program (e.g. Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, EMT, etc.) or who have been dismissed from such a program must submit the required School of NursingMitigating Circumstances form and provide supporting documentation of the mitigating circumstances to be considered eligible to South College School of Nursing. Admission is not guaranteed, and the School of Nursing may require a letter from the former program explaining the circumstances.

Applicants who are not in good academic standing from two previous nursing or allied health programs (e.g. Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, EMT, etc.) or who have been dismissed from two such programs will not be considered for admission or readmission to the South College Nursing program.

Applicants are required to take the ATI TEAS Assessment as part of the application process. The TEAS Assessment schedule and additional information is available in the Admissions Department, Student Services Department, and or School of Nursing.

Applicants who have completed the TEAS Assessment within 12 months prior to the date of application, may opt to submit their TEAS Assessment transcript directly from ATI.

Admission to the School of Nursing is competitive and dependent upon class size. Applicants will be ranked based on an approved ranking system that includes, but not limited to, GPA and TEAS score.

For a nursing class (or classes) to be considered for transfer into a South College Nursing program, the class must have been completed within the past 18 months prior to the cohort start date. Only nursing courses with a grade of A or B are considered for transfer and a course description or syllabus may be required to evaluate equivalency.

Attend the nursing orientation on the scheduled date in its entirety.

In addition, each prospective student must provide proof of ability to perform the skills needed to practice nursing effectively. All nursing students must comply with communicable diseases blood-borne pathogen requirements that the clinical agencies require. Therefore proof of the following are minimum requirements for the nursing applicant (additional requirements may apply depending on clinical agency requirements):.

Common communicable disease immunization or immunity, including MMR (2 in series if born after 1957), TDaP (booster required every 10 years) and varicella vaccine (2 in series). Some clinical facilities may require titers for MMR, HBV, and Varicella even though you have proof of previous immunization.

Acceptable drug screen. Students may be required to obtain than one acceptance drug screen per year depending on the requirements of the clinical affiliate. Upon notification of the drug screen results, the student will have 5 working days to provide prescription validation. Students are responsible for costs associated with any required testing.

Acceptable criminal background check for a minimum of past 15 years. Students may be required to obtain than one acceptance criminal background check per year depending on the requirements of the clinical affiliate. If the background check reveals previous criminal convictions, admittance into the program will be made on a case by case basis.

Proof of health insurance coverage throughout the entire nursing program.

Valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card or Certificate.

Prospective students must demonstrate the following functional capacities. In no instance will an accommodation be made which will compromise nursing care, or that will put patients or other students at risk. Accommodation granted when a student is generally admitted to South College does not guarantee that this modification will apply to admission to the nursing program.

Additional immunizations titers may be required per clinical facility requirements.

Adequate to allow effective evaluation and therapeutic intervention related to nursing care, and to ensure safety of self and others in providing care.

Adequate to allow mastery of activities requiring detailed movements.

Adequate to allow mastery of basic course content and to demonstrate sound judgment in simulated and real-life nursing situations.

The Nursing Assistant program is for students who are interested in pursuing a Nursing Assistant Certificate and or pre-requisites for an associate degree in nursing. Through this certificate program, students will learn the specific skill sets of the nursing assistant and prepare students to apply to an associate degree in nursing program. The nursing assistant courses prepare students for immediate employment as a nurse assistant. Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Nursing Assistant Certificate and are eligible to take the New Mexico Nurse Assisting Certification (CNA) exam.
