Graduate Certificate Programs in Rhetoric and Composition Writing

Rhetoric and Composition Writing is currently accepting applications from potential students for enrollment in fall 2023.

The Advanced Certificate in Rhetoric Writing, a standalone program, offers M.A., Ph.D., and non-degree graduate students the opportunity to pursue a coherent body of coursework in the advanced, interdisciplinary study of rhetoric and writing, encompassing theoretical, applied, and pedagogical aspects of language, literacy, and discourse in a range of historical, cultural, social, educational, and political contexts. Designed to complement graduate work in literary studies as well as other areas of emphasis within and beyond English, the certificate provides focused learning and mentorship for students whose future goals include scholarship, teaching, administration, and or consulting related to writing and rhetoric in a range of academic, professional, and community settings.

A four-course, twelve (12) credit program, the Advanced Certificate in Rhetoric Writing is available to all degree-seeking students admitted to Fordham English Ph.D. and M.A. degree programs. In short, this standalone advanced certificate program is open to any qualified applicant.

Courses in this group have the ENRW attribute.

The Professional Writing Graduate Certificate offers professionals opportunities to develop and improve communication skills vital to advancing in the workplace.

The certificate is designed for busy professionals. All courses are offered via the web and the program can be completed in as few as three consecutive semesters.

An application to the graduate certificate program and official transcripts must be submitted. Applicants must apply online. All requested materials must be submitted by the established deadline.

Professional and Technical Writing concentration in the MA in English.

Following the MA concentration in professional and technical writing, the certificate is centered on workplace uses of language. Students who do not seek a full master degree may be interested in a Certificate in Professional and Technical Writing. The certificate program enables a student to attend graduate courses associated with writing and rhetoric without requiring those in the study of literature or literary research or the writing of a thesis. It is an eighteen hour program, a full and unified course of study in itself.

This certificates is valuable for anyone pursuing an MA in English who is also interested in workplace and technical writing whether they are starting a career or are already experienced in the field and are looking for professional development. This certificate is also beneficial for those who are wanting to grow within their current careers.

The PTW certificate is a useful complement to the Literature or Cultural Studies concentrations. It offers students hands-on, practical and theoretical expertise in a wide range of issues and skills needed to develop a career in professional writing. Our graduates can be found throughout the DC area working independently, for the federal government, or for major corporations.

The most important part of the application for PTW is the sample of professional work. This may include an optional portfolio of professional writing samples. The samples in the portfolio should be chosen to demonstrate your ability to write to a specific audience for a specific purpose. However, the instances you select should reflect your expertise and experience as a non-literary writer, as well as give us a sense of the genres of professional writing you have worked with prior to entering our program. Samples that demonstrate your research and argumentation skills are especially encouraged. Please note, however, that narratives and creative-nonfiction should not be included in the portfolio, since such writing is not a principal focus for the PWR concentration.

Graduate Certificate in Technical Writing and Public Rhetorics.

Writing Composition and Rhetoric Certificate of Grad Study.

The Writing, Composition and Rhetoric Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) for teachers and other writing professionals improves students' knowledge of contemporary theories, issues, and practices in writing and writing instruction. Students develop their writing abilities by analyzing their own writing and the writing of published professionals. Courses emphasize composition theory, writing assessment, and the role of technology in writing.

The Rowan University Writing: Composition and Rhetoric Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) program requires the completion of 9 semester hours (s.h.).The following courses make up the Writing, Composition and Rhetoric Certificate of Graduate Study program.

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program.

Bachelor degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Topic: Describe the kind of writing you see yourself doing in your professional life or how you might use this program to advance your teaching career. Applicants for admission must have completed a baccalaureate degree with an overall GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale or be enrolled as a current Winthrop University graduate student in good standing.

A minimum of 12 semester hours of WRIT courses must be taken in residence at Winthrop University. Students who completed their baccalaureate degree at Winthrop and took 2 or of the required 500-level courses will not be eligible to pursue this certificate.

Two lower-division classes in grammar, writing and or rhetoric (four credits each).

Core course: ENG 414, Writing for Publication (four credits).

20 elective credits from writing-focused upper-division English courses. Up to eight of these elective credits may come from EMDA courses such as Screening Theory Practice, Podcast Design Production or Writing Nonlinear).

Most students who are working on a major in a subject other than English complete this certificate over two or three academic years.
