CREES offers a 9-12 credit hour Graduate Certificate Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. This certificate is intended primarily for graduate-level students in LSA departments and professional schools as a means to acquire context-based expertise on the region of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe as well as formal recognition of this expertise on their U-M transcript. Required for all certificate students for one year, including one fall semester and one winter semester ideally during the first year after joining program. Graduate Certificate students are encouraged to meet with the CREES Advisor at least once per year to evaluate progress toward the certificate. Students in the Graduate Certificate Program in REES will be encouraged to participate in internships, research, or study in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. We anticipate that students enrolled in the REES Certificate Program will be situated to develop outstanding and competitive internship projects. Current Rackham Students: Any student with a bachelor degree who has been admitted to or is currently enrolled in a Rackham graduate degree program at U-M is eligible to at any time for the Graduate Certificate program in REES. To make enrollment in the certificate program effective the same term during which degree conferral will take place, applications must be received by January 15 for winter term, May 15 for spring summer, or September 15 for fall term. Non-Rackham Applicants: The certificate can be pursued by students currently enrolled in non-Rackham programs and professional schools at U-M.

Some students may consider completing the certificate in conjunction with academic or professional study in another department or school. The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REES) graduate certificate is a 12-credit hour program of study designed primarily for graduate students in CLAS and the professional schools. The certificate allows for that expertise to be officially recognized on the students’ KU transcript, enhancing the graduates’ career opportunities. The main academic objectives of the graduate certificate include introducing and training graduate students in the current methodological approaches to the study of the REES area allowing the students to acquire a deeper knowledge of the area from different disciplinary perspectives and guiding the students in integrating their knowledge of the area, methodology, and a REES-area language. As a part of the capstone seminar, graduate certificate students write an original research paper on a REES-area topic that utilizes research in both English and the target language. As a prerequisite to beginning the course sequence that leads to the certificate, the student must demonstrate a working knowledge of a REES-area language equivalent of at least 2 years of university study. The CREES graduate certificate includes a 12-credit hour course sequence (4 3-credit hour courses).
