The Preclinical Psychology post-baccalaureate certificate program consists of nine psychology courses required for application to most graduate programs awarding either the doctor of psychology in clinical psychology (PsyD) or the doctor of philosophy in clinical psychology (PhD). Please note that these options are not eligible for financial aid.

Psychology is a science that seeks to answer a wide range of questions how we think, feel, act and interact with others. This course will give a broad of the entire field of psychology, which students will learn through in-class demonstrations, outside observations, discussions, and presentations. We will explore human behavior from a biological, psychological and socio-cultural perspective. We will discuss the history of psychology beginning with an of psychology roots, observing how prevailing paradigms have shifted throughout the centuries. We'll then discuss think like a social scientist, with an attitude of open mindedness and skepticism, as we observe people in different social settings. Discussion will include the tools and methods that are used by social scientists to formulate their questions and propose answers. With the tools of neuroscience we will explore the biological underpinnings of mind and emotions and how they influence behavior. We will seek to understand and have empathy with individuals suffering from psychological disorders ranging from mild depression to severe psychosis. Discussion will cover ways to diagnose psychopathology and therapies that have been proposed to heal such internal suffering. Practical skills for coping with stress and emotions will also be explored. Finally, we try to uncover group dynamics that can give rise to pathological and sometimes destructive behavior as that observed in cults. The course will conclude with a theme of malleability that challenges assumptions how we perceive, remember and think. Carries social science credit.
The purpose of this course is to present an of the field of psychology. Among the topics we will cover are: history of the field, methods in psychological research, biological bases of behavior, perception, learning, memory, motivation, emotion, social influences on behavior, and psychological disorders. Class lectures, readings, and discussions will convey a sense of some of the foundational questions and methods of the science of psychology. Ultimately, the goal of this course is to impart an initial understanding of some fundamentals of human nature and behavior, as well as instill a deeper appreciation for the science of psychology. This course explores techniques for describing the real world with numbers and for making educated guesses how the world works by manipulating these numbers. Students acquire a knowledge of execute statistical tests, but importantly when and why to execute these tests. In this course, we will explore personality psychology broadly. In lay terms, personality psychology explores deep questions of who we are, and why we think, feel, and behave as we do. This course is a survey of theories and research in cognitive psychology, covering topics such as perception, attention, memory, representation of knowledge, language, reasoning and problem solving, judgment and decision-making, and consciousness. The focus of this course is the development of perception, cognition, language, personality, and social interaction from infancy through adolescence. The course considers perspectives and methods in developmental research. A central goal is to help students develop an appreciation of different criteria for evaluating research and other forms of evidence. This course introduces the study of psychopathology with an emphasis on the continuum between normal and abnormal patterns of behavior, emotional regulation, and thought processes. Students will learn different types of psychological disorders including mood disorders, panic, anxiety, obsessions, personality disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual dysfunctions, childhood-onset disorders, trauma, and neurocognitive disorders. We will consider biological, psychological, and societal causes of dysfunction. We will also explore how psychopathology has been understood throughout history, how those views have evolved to inform psychological treatments available today, and how culture continues to play a role in shaping our conceptualization of mental illness. This course introduces major concepts and methods of clinical psychology. The course emphasizes four main areas relevant to clinical psychology: (1) fundamentals of clinical psychology with some discussion of the history of the field, (2) psychological assessment, (3) psychotherapy, and (4) research that has been used to investigate the efficacy of interventions in clinical psychology. Ethical issues as they relate to the field are also be considered. Course requirements include an annotated bibliography and research paper, two essay exams, and class attendance and participation. If there are pending issues such as grading, degree conferral, outside coursework, etc., it may be necessary to review your unofficial transcript beforehand to ensure aesthetical content.
In order to be considered for degree conferral, you must submit a Graduation Application to the Office of the Registrar by the deadlines listed below. All doctoral students are required to for and obtain a Master en route degree en route. Degrees are conferred September 30th, January 31st, June 30th, and August 31st of each year. In order to be eligible for a degree, you must complete all program requirements by the degree date. For doctoral students, this includes but is not limited to completion of all required coursework, externships, internships, passing the oral defense, completion of all revisions, and submission of a research project dissertation.
Applications for the January degree are due November 1st while applications for the June, August, and September degrees are due March 1st. Degrees are only conferred when the Office of the Registrar officially confirms that all requirements have been met. Diplomas will be mailed to the address the student lists on the Graduation Application within 8 weeks of the degree date.
Students who plan to defend must schedule their oral defense with the Psychology Office at least 2 weeks in advance of their oral defense date. Students who plan to graduate should schedule their oral defense early enough to have time to work on revisions and submit their research project dissertation before the degree date.

Which one best suits your need?
The Fordham Graduate School of Education offers two Advanced Certificate (formerly Professional Diploma) programs in school psychology. Both programs lead to certification as a school psychologist. One of these programs, the bilingual Advanced Certificate program, leads specifically to a school psychology certificate with a bilingual extension.
Both Advanced Certificate programs prepare students to serve as practicing school psychologists. The student is then awarded the Advanced Certificate. Students who complete the program successfully are eligible to apply for National Certification as a School Psychologist, and students who are U.S. citizens are recommended to New York state for New York certification as a school psychologist.
Graduates of the bilingual school psychology program who complete the master in the psychology of the bilingual students are eligible for New York state certification as bilingual school psychologists (i.e. certification as a school psychologist with a bilingual extension).
To complete an Advanced Certificate in school psychology or bilingual school psychology, students must.
Complete the prescribed program of study, including a minimum of 66 credits beyond the baccalaureate degree, with a minimum of 30 graduate credits taken at Fordham with the approval of an adviser (credit for previous graduate work is granted depending on its relation to the program) .
Maintain a minimum overall graduate grade point average of 3.25 (between B and B+) .
Although a passing score on the test is not required for graduation, students are encouraged but not required to seek national certification. Because the Fordham school psychology program is fully approved by NASP, students who successfully complete the program and obtain passing scores on the national certification exam are eligible for National Certification as a School Psychologist.
Acceptance into the program carries with it the responsibility to uphold the published ethical standards of the American Psychological Association. Violation of ethical standards may result in termination from the program. The program is committed to fostering and maintaining a learning environment in which all members of the community feel valued and respected. Students may be terminated from the program if they fail to complete any of these requirements.
Applicants who lack one or of these prerequisites may be admitted to the program however, all but two prerequisites must be completed prior to taking any program coursework. These two prerequisites may be taken concurrently with program coursework. It is preferred that missing prerequisites be taken at Fordham.

Admission to this program is only for students in the M.A. program in School Community Psychology. Admission is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School. Students must be in good academic standing in the School and Community Psychology M.A. program to apply and enroll in the Certificate program. Students will be admitted concurrently to the Certificate program for the Spring Summer of second year of the Master program.
The last twelve credits of the School and Community Psychology program are the internships, which are the basis for this Graduate Certificate and are required for full completion of this program and for recommendation for state school psychology certification and state psychology limited licensing (LLP). During Spring Summer of the second year, students will complete their Master requirements by enrolling in EDP 8320 and EDP 8 0 for a total of six credits and during this time period, students will be concurrently enrolled in the M.A. and Graduate Certificate program, and these credits will count toward both the Master degree and the Certificate. Graduate School policy permits nine credits to be applied to fulfill the requirements of both a Certificate and a Master degree.
