CSAS offers a 15-credit hour Graduate Certificate in South Asian Studies (SAS). This certificate is intended for U-M graduate students in LSA departments and professional schools. The goal of the certificate is to provide a program of study grounded in in-depth interdisciplinary understandings of South Asia to graduate students whose academic and career trajectories require area-focused knowledge and training.
Minimum Credit Requirement. Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of graduate-level work in SAS-approved courses.
Course Distribution. Courses must be distributed in at least two disciplines, such as art, anthropology, history, literature, music, political science, religion, or sociology. Language is not considered a discipline for this requirement.
Proseminar in South Asian Studies. SAS 501, which is typically offered each fall (3 credits).
Language Proficiency. Students must attain at least first-year proficiency in a SA language (equivalent to two terms at U-M). The language requirement may be fulfilled by coursework or by demonstrating competency via a placement exam.
Students must complete at least one term in their current U-M graduate professional degree program before applying.
Current Rackham Students: A Rackham student must complete at least one term of study before applying for the Graduate Certificate in SAS. Applications must be received by January 15 for winter term, May 15 for spring summer, or September 15 for fall term.
CSAS encourages the submission of transcripts from other postsecondary institutions at which you have completed relevant language and area studies courses, such as study abroad programs, junior colleges, and summer sessions.
Non-Rackham Applicants: Students must complete at least one term of study in their current U-M graduate professional program before applying to the Graduate Certificate program.
