The Center for Southeast Asian Studies offers a 15-credit hour Graduate Certificate Program in Southeast Asian Studies. This certificate is intended for U-M graduate-level students in LSA departments and U-M professional schools. The goal of the certificate is to provide a program of study grounded in in-depth interdisciplinary understandings of Southeast Asia to graduate students whose academic and career trajectories require area-focused knowledge and training.
Up to four of the fifteen credit hours may consist of graduate-level language instruction.
SEAS 501, Introduction to Southeast Asian Studies (3 credits).
A basic level of proficiency in a Southeast Asia language is required for completion of the Certificate. This can be demonstrated through successful coursework (first year competency) or by a proficiency exam.

Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies.
You must be in good academic standing in any NIU graduate program or in the graduate-level classification of student-at-large.
The certificate requires proficiency in a Southeast Asian language (equivalent to one year of language courses [10 hours]). You may test out of the language requirement native speakers from Southeast Asia may have the language requirement waived. In addition to the language, the certificate requires a series of four courses offered, on-campus or online, by the center affiliated academic units including one core course, SEAS 625: Southeast Asi A Multidisciplinary Perspective (3 credits) and three elective courses selected from the three categories listed on this worksheet.
