The South Asia Institute administers a Certificate in South Asia Studies for students matriculated in graduate degree programs at Columbia. To earn the Certificate, students must complete 24 credits of graduate courses on South Asia, in at least three different disciplines, e.g. Anthropology, Art History, Economics, History, Literature, Politics, Religion, etc. The sequence of courses selected by the student pursuing the Certificate must be approved by the Institute director. The requirements for the certificate must be completed by the time of graduation from the M.A. or Ph.D. program. Elementary and Intermediate anguage courses may not be counted toward the Certificate. Advanced level (third or fourth year) may count toward the Certificate. The certificate is an additional credential that graduate students may earn with courses that will count toward coursework requirement for the M.A. or Ph.D. degree. Therefore it is possible to earn the Certificate without taking any courses beyond that required for the Ph.D. degree at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Courses with comparative content, where South Asia is not the principal field of inquiry and discussion, may or may not be counted toward the certificate, at the discretion of the Institute.

This certificate is intended for U-M graduate-level students in LSA departments and U-M professional schools. The goal of the certificate is to provide a program of study grounded in in-depth interdisciplinary understandings of Southeast Asia to graduate students whose academic and career trajectories require area-focused knowledge and training. Only Rackham courses may be used to meet Certificate requirements. A basic level of proficiency in a Southeast Asia language is required for completion of the Certificate.

BUCSA is pleased to offer the Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies. Graduate students in any Boston University graduate or professional program can earn the certificate by fulfilling the following requirements while also fulfilling the requirements of their degree programs. The Graduate Certificate in most cases canbe completed without taking courses beyond the number required for the student’s degree. The certificate will be awarded only upon completion of the degree program. Students are very strongly encouraged to consult with the Director or Associate Director of BUCSA at the beginning of their studies in order to ensure that their planned courses will fulfill the goals of the certificate program. At the very latest, however, students must inform the Pardee School’s Manager of Graduate Affairs of their intention to earn the Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies by the same deadline as their Intent to Graduate Forms are due (i.e., late Sept.
