Graduate Certificate For Teaching Students with Autism-Spectrum Disorders.

This Teaching Students with Autism (TSA) Graduate Certificate Program (Non-Degree) is a fully online program from UNC School of Special Education, focused on educating those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and or Significant Support Needs (SSN). This certificate is focused on assessing and teaching K-12 students identified as having an autism spectrum disorder and those with severe needs.

The certificate consists of four courses (12 graduate credits) and the online program offers the freedom to attend from anywhere. You can start any term.

Delivery Option Start Term:Online program: start any term.

Courses are practical and require that you be able to work with a student with autism significant support needs to complete your coursework.

You will take one course each term, allowing you to focus on each topic in depth.

Possess (or be in the process of finishing) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or a comparable degree from a foreign institution.

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better (on a 4.00 point scale) for the most recent degree earned or current degree in progress.

If you are still completing your bachelor degree at the time you apply, admission will be based on your current cumulative GPA, and you will need to re official transcript (showing your conferred degree and final GPA) during your first semester.

If you have completed a master degree, or at least 18 credit hours towards a master degree, the GPA of your master work will be used.

The School of Special Education will evaluate all eligible applicants to determine entry into the Teaching Students with Autism Graduate Certificate program.

Note: the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is NOT required for this program.

At this time, UNC can serve online education to students from every state, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. However, we are not currently accepting students to our online programs who reside in the CNMIs. Due to how fluid these agreements can be at the state or federal level, we recommend checking our Eligibility by State page for details.

International students residing outside of the United States are eligible to online programs. Applicants for online programs must demonstrate English proficiency, or enroll in the UNC Intensive English Program, in order to be considered.

Students in completely online UNC programs are not required to come to the United States.

Therefore, to ensure that certificate graduates attain this specialized knowledge, students will need to complete all certificate coursework directly from this UNC program.

This is an Extended Campus program, which means:.

Certain courses may carry specific course fees for additional services and materials.

Program tuition for the 2022-23 academic year (which runs Fall, Spring, and Summer terms) is $583 per credit hour. Tuition for the 2023-24 academic year will be determined mid-June 2023.

The primary emphasis of this course is on the education of students with mild moderate disabilities in inclusive classrooms. Participants will learn to develop comprehensive instructional plans fully inclusive of students with educational disabilities, utilize an IEP to guide instruction, develop accommodations and modifications appropriate to students and the curriculum, design individual, small, and large group instructions, and evaluate various service delivery options for educating students with special needs.

In this course students will learn strategies and purported mechanisms behind current intervention models designed for students with ASD. Student will be able to evaluate research evidence and claims of effectiveness of each intervention, and will design and implement appropriate interventions for student with ASD.

This course focuses upon the communication problems of persons who are developmentally disabled, physically challenged, hearing impaired, and deaf-blind. Students learn strategies for enhancing communication and learn develop and implement a variety of augmentative communication systems.

Education Implications for Sensory, Motor, and Health Impairments.

This course addresses the impact of physical disabilities on learning. Emphasis is placed on the educational needs of children with cerebral palsy, visual impairment, or hearing loss in combination with intellectual disability. Basic anatomy of the eye and ear are covered along with the common causes of vision and hearing loss. This course prepares teachers to perform functional vision and hearing evaluations and to translate those findings into appropriate classroom accommodations and adaptations. Many children with disabilities have unmet sensory integration needs that influence their behavior and subsequent readiness to learn.

This course focuses on the education of students with disabilities and other learners from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The goal of the course is to promote access to the general curriculum for all students through participation in standards-based reform. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides the theoretical framework for this course. Through an examination of historical milestones, landmark legislation, systems for classification, approaches to intervention, and the daily life experiences of diverse learners, students acquire knowledge diversity and the resources, services, and supports available for creating a just society through education.

This course addresses the reciprocal relationship between human development and disability. Prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal causes of disability will be presented. Students will learn theoretical perspectives, research, and current disagreements related to causes, identification, and treatment of disabilities. Prevention and intervention strategies will be presented for each disability. The application of assistive technology will be covered across disabilities.

Students will enroll in three courses. Course topics include special education (and related) teaching methods, developmental nature of disabilities, and special education policies practices. At least one course must be a teaching methods course. All courses are relevant to educators who are not special educators.
