The online Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Special Education at the University of Florida is a CPED-influenced professional practice doctorate designed to develop expert practitioners, who can serve as service providers, school leaders, professional development providers, and advocates for individuals with disabilities.

Graduates will study their own practice and that of the contexts in which they work, and they will effect change based on evidence in an effort to improve academic and social outcomes for students with disabilities.

All students in the cohort will move through a structured program plan together. All students will take a series of required special education courses on topics such as:.

Programs and supervisory committees have the discretion to require than 12 hours of research methodology courses.

All students admitted to the online Ed.D. program will select an area of specialization which consists of 12 credits of coursework within the structured program plan. Areas of specializations include dyslexia, disability in society, early childhood, and teacher leadership and learning.

Our program is designed for working professionals in special education and related disciplines who want to learn use research and inquiry schools to enact change in your local context. Ideal candidates are proven and experienced leaders in their professional context who are committed to staying in and improving practice after graduation. This program is not designed to prepare students for tenure-track and or research-intensive positions in higher education.

Successful applicants are established special education professionals and leaders who are committed to enacting change within their local context. Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae, and an academic writing sample. Applicants must also complete a Structured Statement of Purpose via Qualtrics. Finally, applicants may be asked to participate in an admission interview, which may be held in person or via teleconference. The GRE is no longer required for this program.

The Online Ed.D. only accepts students for Fall semesters. Applications are made online through the UF Graduate School. qualifications and educational goals match our mission. Applications for the Fall 2023 cohort will be open from November 1, 2022 to February 1, 2023. All applications will be reviewed in February 2023 regardless of when it is submitted. Only completed applications will be reviewed.

The Online Ed.D. in Special Education is designed as a part-time degree program for practicing educators so that participants are able to balance a full-time work schedule with graduate school. Most of our students complete their degree in approximately four years, although programs may vary in duration.

The online Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program is a part-time, CPED-influenced professional practice doctorate designed to prepare scholarly practitioners and educational leaders. Both programs require a dissertation though the form and function differs between the two programs.

At this time, UF no longer requires students to come to campus for qualifying exams or dissertation defense. This is not required, but many students opt for this special experience.

Participants will be responsible for tuition, books, travel, housing (for on-campus obligations), and application fees (including GRE testing). Students can anticipate taking a minimum of 60 credit hours for program completion. Tuition costs per credit hour can be found here.

Federal financial aid may be available in the form of grants and loans.

The Special Education Ed.D.is a four-year program requiring a minimum of 90 credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree (up to 30 credits of previous relevant coursework may apply).

The Graduate School at the University of Florida allows up to 30 graduate credit hours taken at other universities within the last seven years to count toward your UF degree at the discretion of the supervisory committee.

In this course, learners are introduced to key components of qualitative and quantitative research designs and the means to critically appraise the application of research designs as observed in the scholarly literature. The University core research designs are presented. Consideration is given to the initial selection and defense of a research design to address a problem that emerged from the extant literature.

This residency allows learners to continue developing their skills as academic researchers. Learners will have hands-on experience applying quantitative and qualitative design principals to develop the foundational elements for their potential dissertation studies. Prerequisite: RES-850, RES-825, RES-831, or RCS-831.

This course provides an introduction to the sampling, data collection, and data analysis methods employed in qualitative and quantitative research designs. Learners explore the alignment of sampling, data collection, and data analysis methods to the research topic, research questions, and research design. The course positions learners to select qualitative or quantitative designs for their dissertation studies. Prerequisite: RES-831.

SPE-817: Supervision and Administration of Special Education Total Credits: 3.

The course emphasizes analysis of the leadership practices necessary to guide construction of appropriate internal and external frameworks for K-12 educators and students. Within these boundaries, the course addresses student assessment, internal collaboration, and professional development. Prerequisite: RES-861.

SPE-822: Fiscal Management in Special Education Total Credits: 3.

This course examines budgeting, fiscal planning, and grant writing and management in the special education setting. Leadership skills for fiscal management and fiscal integrity are addressed.

This course provides an of the impact of leadership and the effects of behaviors on the formulation and execution of strategy within an organization. Prerequisite: RES-861 or RES-866.

In this course, learners explore the basic components of GCU qualitative core research designs including descriptive, case study, and phenomenology. The nature of epistemological foundations and the structure of problem statements, purpose statements, research questions, data sources, collection and analysis approaches are discussed in the context of each design.

In this course, learners differentiate the epistemological foundations and explore the data trustworthiness, research ethics, and potential for bias in descriptive, case study, and phenomenology research designs. The process of building a rationale for design choice and aligning the research questions, interview questions, problem statement, and purpose statement is addressed. Sources of qualitative data are introduced for each design, and ethical aspects of research are discussed. Prerequisite: RES-841.

This course explores the opportunities and challenges facing leaders in the global environment. The course topics focus on aspects of leading global and diverse workforces, and on theories of leadership and leadership development in diverse and global cultures. Prerequisite: RES-861 or RES-866.

In this residency, learners orally present and defend an expanded design of their preliminary dissertation research from RSD-851. Emphasis is placed on developing the qualitative dissertation. Prerequisite: RES-843.

This course examines the current and emerging trends and issues in special education within the K-12 setting. Topics are placed in the context of legal compliance and the provision of appropriate educational opportunities for all students. Learners connect these ideas to their research interests to continue developing components of their research prospectus. Prerequisite: RES-861.

In this course, learners apply the skills of the practitioner-scholar. They are self-motivated and committed to reflective practice. They actively seek input from other scholars while continuing to design independent research under the guidance of the dissertation committee. Prerequisite: RES-871, RES-885, RSD-883, or RSD-884.

In this course, learners explore qualitative data collection techniques and sources of qualitative data in the context of answering the research questions posed by a study. Consideration is given to the recognition of data saturation and the management of data. Prerequisite: RES-843.

The Doctor of Education program (EdD) uses an applied, project-based approach to prepare professionals who seek to lead improvements in the strategy, practice, policy, and outcomes of educational practice. EdD research focuses on solving a problem in the workplace or in the professional field of education.

The Special Education (SE) specialization is designed for professionals who work with gifted and disabled students in a variety of settings. An EdD dissertation is a scholarly documentation of research that makes an original contribution to the field of educational study. The step-by-step process requires care in choosing a topic, documenting its importance, planning the methodology, and conducting the research. These activities lead smoothly into the writing and oral presentation of your dissertation.

The EdD program requires 48 credits for degree completion. Students who choose the Nursing Education specialization must take two additional courses for a total of 54 credit hours. All foundation competency courses, specialization courses, and method coursework must be completed before beginning the Doctoral Comprehensive Assessment course (CMP-9601E).

Additional credit hours may be allowed as needed to complete your dissertation research. If granted, additional courses will be added to your degree program in alignment with the SAP and Academic Maximum Time to Completion policies. The estimated time needed to complete this program is months.

The course emphasizes : (a) use effective literature search strategies (b) develop a scholarly synthesis of research literature (c) organize research literature around identified themes, including a study problem, purpose, and theoretical perspectives and (d) focus on developing a scholarly exposition that reflects divergent viewpoints and contrasting perspectives. The overarching goal is for you to understand strategies for surveying scholarly literature that avoid bias, focus on educational practice-based research problems, and address the requirements of a scholarly literature review.

This course introduces you to the research process by exploring its underpinnings, examining its paradigms, and investigating the foundations of qualitative and quantitative methodologies used in educational studies. Specific course topics involve the ethics of conducting research data collection and analysis techniques and issues of feasibility, trustworthiness, validity, reliability, transferability, and rigor. The goal is to familiarize yourself with the concepts and skills associated with conducting theoretical and applied research.

This course provides the foundational knowledge to become a critical consumer of statistical-based research and a skilled analyst of non-inferential quantitative data. Coursework focuses on understanding multivariate data, non-inferential and inferential statistical concepts, the conventions of quantitative data analysis, and interpretations and critical inferences in statistical results. The course culminates in a synthesis project to demonstrate your statistical skills and present your results using APA guidelines.
