The Sustainability Program is a multidisciplinary effort to encourage students to explore complex societal sustainability issues that do not fit easily into one traditional academic discipline. The genesis of this program lies in the realization that a scientific and technical knowledge of environmental, ecological, and energy system challenges will not be sufficient to develop viable answers. Many disciplines at the University make contributions to these issues, ranging from ethical, spiritual, and artistic, to economic, political, and sociological approaches. Sustainability related jobs are rapidly increasing in every field. With only a handful of sustainability graduate programs currently available, the Graduate Certificate in Sustainability could differentiate you from other job applicants.
The certificate requires completion of 12 graduate credits that include six core credits (two core courses) and six elective credits. The two core courses are SSP 500: Foundations in Sustainability and SSP 580: Applied Sustainability. A student can start the certificate in the Spring semester (by taking SSP 580) or in the Fall semester (by taking SSP 500).

The purpose of the Environmental and Sustainability Management Graduate Certificate is to prepare students to develop and manage environmental and sustainability initiatives and practices that will reduce, remove, and redress environmental impacts in various types of organizations. With courses offered by the College of Science, the Schar School of Policy and Government, the School of Business, and the College of Engineering and Computing, the proposed certificate provides students with a transdisciplinary perspective on environmental and sustainability challenges. Upon completion of the certificate program, graduates will be able to: 1) Identify environmental and sustainability management challenges in the private and public sector 2) Recognize the mechanisms of public policy making that influence environmental and sustainability management decisions and 3) Apply fundamental concepts in management science, environmental science, public administration, and management to craft and execute sustainability solutions.

The COGS in Sustainability Studies, and the courses that comprise the program, are aimed at helping students in diverse graduate disciplines understand avenues for implementing comprehensive sustainability solutions. The Sustainability Studies COGS builds on the existing expertise in the Geography, Planning Sustainability in the School of Earth Environment at Rowan. While the courses comprising the program are housed in the Department, the program should be attractive from graduate programs in STEM, business, education, social sciences, humanities, and communication arts departments at the University. The courses may be offered online.
The Certificate of Graduate Study in Sustainability Studies is a full-time or part-time program offered in a face-to-face format on our Glassboro, NJ campus. It requires the completion of 9 graduate semester hours (3 courses).

Sustainability Studies Certificate of Graduate Study

The certificate provides students with a broad understanding of all of the major applied areas of sustainable organizational leadership, including alternative transportation, waste reduction, renewable energy, green building, corporate social responsibility, fair trade, shared value, localization, community finance, and other emerging sustainable business practices. Certificate students complete coursework in corporate sustainability, management, ecological economics, natural resource management, life sciences, and earth sciences.
Students who complete the certificate will have a strong grasp of what sustainability means, how it is achieved, and the forces that discourage sustainable practices. This understanding will enhance their ability to serve as effective leaders in both small and large corporations, nonprofit organizations, and the public sector throughout the region, state, and country.
The program requires the completion of 32 credits, consisting of five required core courses and three elective courses from business, environmental science policy, and other subject areas. All courses taken for the certificate must be completed with a grade of C or better and a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Certificate in Sustainability Leadership

Students seeking the REIS graduate certificate gain both breadth and depth in an energy and sustainability curriculum. Participants take classes in different colleges to reap a broad perspective of energy sustainability. In addition to attending courses and a REIS seminar class, students conduct a capstone project to demonstrate mastery of an energy research area.
REIS is a stand-alone graduate program.
Submit a Concurrent Graduate Certificate Program application form to the Graduate Division (GD). Be sure to carefully review GD application requirements.
To obtain the graduate certificate in Renewable Energy and Island Sustainability (REIS), students must fulfill the following six requirements:.
Have passed at least one course in Technological Specialization Courses.
Fifteen credits (plus one for a REIS Seminar course) are required for the certificate in approved 600 and 400 level courses with at least nine units at the 600 level. For each course, student should earn at least a C in that course (a Graduate Division requirement) and should have an overall grade point average of a B in the 15 units of approved 600 and 400 level courses.
The research project will result in a research paper in the area of energy or sustainability that will constitute the culminating experience for the REIS certificate. The quality of the paper should be similar to a refereed conference or journal paper or a chapter of a thesis dissertation. Note that this work is in addition to thesis project requirements for an MS or PhD degree.
Have completed at least one short course or workshop in advanced topics in renewable energy or sustainability, or attended a professional conference in renewable energy or sustainability.
Note that the seminar course will expose students to different areas in renewable energy and island sustainability. The seminar course will provide students with broad level knowledge and awareness of energy and sustainability research and education areas. This will be a one unit course.

This course is an introduction to the philosophical and practical principles of green and sustainable design through the exploration of environmental issues, sustainable materials and methods, and public policy and decision making. Sustainability principles, policies, and programs that encourage and guide current initiatives are analyzed. Innovative strategies for implementing sustainable projects, programs, and practices are investigated through the review of case studies and completion of a final course project.
This course is an introduction to energy policy and decision making, primarily in the United States. Students will examine the nature and scope of environmental, energy, and resource problems, analyze the goals and strategies of the renewable energy movement, investigate ideological, political, and institutional forces that shape policymaking and implementation, and conduct in-depth analyses of the various approaches to U.S. energy needs. An exploration of renewable energy technology, feasibility, and implementation is incorporated through the analysis of case studies and current events.
The study and consideration of global environmental and climate change are of increasing significance to society. In this course, students will examine the evidence for and causes of global environmental change and will analyze potential impacts on environmental policy and society. Emphasis will be on the implications of environmental change for environmental managers, including management decision-making, the adequacy of the current regulatory framework in addressing these problems, and the effect on future policy and legislation.
