The Engineering and Management Systems (EMS) certificate is no longer available for enrollment, it has been replaced by the Optimization Quantitative Decision Science (OQDS) certificate.

Students who were enrolled in the EMS program before August 1, 2021 have the option to (i) complete the requirements of the EMS program and receive an EMS certificate, or (ii) complete the requirements of the OQDS program and receive a OQDS certificate. Under no circumstances will both certificates be awarded. Students cannot get the OQDS certificate by completing the old requirements for EMS. Students who have completed their degree (e.g., graduated) cannot retroactively have the EMS certificate renamed OQDS.

The certificate program in Engineering and Management Systems provides students with tools for the complex decision-making problems that arise in engineering, the sciences, and management. It is aimed at three types of students:.

Engineering students interested in preparing for careers in management or consulting.

It offers a coherent, integrated set of core courses that are based on analytical methods with applications in the planning and control of complex systems required by a modern technological society. Emphasis is placed on rigorous modeling and analysis, taking advantage of the vast flow of data and ubiquitous computing power available today. The EMS certificate program complements both the Finance Certificate and the Certificate Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. Our emphasis is on developing analysis skills that are useful in engineering and management.

The EMS certificate program is open to both B.S.E. and A.B. majors. B.S.E. students are required to take math through Math 201 and 202, which will satisfy the math prerequisites of any of the core courses. However, there is flexibility in the choice of core courses, and the math prerequisites depend on the electives that a student chooses.

Please include your class and major, and let me know if you have placed out of any course requirements.

The program for each student is worked out by the student and the departmental adviser. In some cases, a course can fulfill both a certificate program requirement and a regular departmental requirement, with the exception that ORFE concentrators may not double count the course that integrates optimization and uncertainty. The program requirements are as follows:.

PHY 301 Thermal Physics and PHY 312 Experimental Physics (both courses must be taken).

This requirement may be satisfied with a score of 5 on the AP statistics exam or by taking a higher-level statistics course such as ORF 350 or 405, or ECO 302 312.

Note: ORFE majors (class of 2019 and later) may not count the course used in this category as a departmental elective.

An integrative course in management, entrepreneurship or systems:.

Students in engineering departments that require a one-semester project can typically use a suitably designed project to satisfy the requirement.

Acceptable theses can be on a wide range of topics, but they must demonstrate a command of the core disciplines of the EMS Certificate program, including statistics, probability and or optimization. The thesis must demonstrate, in appropriate mathematics, the ability to model a problem and perform analysis that leads to some conclusion or scientific result. A thesis with minimal or no mathematical modeling will not be acceptable.

Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt in Operational Excellence.

Integrative Systems + Design (ISD) systems engineering certificate program, part of the University of Michigan (U-M), has existed for nearly 10 years, providing KLA engineers with technical leadership, depth in their own engineering discipline, breadth across engineering disciplines, knowledge of basic management issues, and the ability to influence and direct product development at a systems level.

The certificate program is designed to introduce students to a broad array of systems engineering topics with a specific emphasis on KLA work in optics and computer science.

In recent years, ISD has moved to the forefront of systems engineering education. We have identified a need nationally for training in systems thinking for engineers who are well-versed in a specific discipline (mechanical engineering, for example) but are preparing for complex, diverse work with large-scale systems, often involving many team members and stakeholders.

Broaden the perspective of engineers by teaching a top-down interdisciplinary engineering approach for the development, design, and manufacturing of complex systems, and balancing the trade-offs required to successfully build these systems.

Strengthen the technical competence and depth of professionals by teaching advanced skills in their engineering disciplines, and by infilling courses in engineering outside of their primary engineering areas.

To obtain the certificate, complete the required core course and at least 3 courses from elective courses below, with a grade of 3.0 4.0 or better.

ISD 520 Introduction to Systems Engineering (typically offered in fall, winter, spring summer).

IOE 461 Quality Engineering Principles and Analysis (typically offered in fall).

ISD 599A Software Systems Engineering Tentative (typically offered in winter).

Bachelor degree in engineering, science, or a related field.

The equivalent of two years of experience in the semiconductor industry (for degree only).

KLA students must be enrolled through U-M as non-candidate-for-degree (NCFD) students in order to complere the professional degree. NCFD status can be changed in a subsequent semester, and allows qualified students to begin their studies before completing a degree application.

Students who want to apply these credits to a degree must Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering + Design degree before enrolling in a 3rd course. Not than six-credits may apply towards the master degree.

All KLA professional certificate students apply as NCFD students. NCFD applications must be completed at least two weeks before the semester begins.

All KLA students who are seeking to be admitted to the degree program must apply through the normal degree application process.

A minimum set of courses must be completed within five years of the start date to be eligible for the professional certificate. Credits may be applied toward a graduate degree for five years after earning the credits.

Purdue alumni are known for moving technology forward, developing innovative products, creating timeless designs, and bringing positive social change. The key to success for many boilermaker trailblazers is systems thinking. Systems thinking teaches people consider the complex interconnections between different elements of social, biological, economic, political, and technological systems and turns the spotlight on the role of humans in improving and changing system designs.

This program trains scientists, economists, engineers, designers, and humanitarians to use systems thinking to make significant advancements in research and in professional contexts.

If a student from any major has completed any of these SYS courses during their graduate studies, the course can be counted towards fulfillment of the certificate requirements.

SYS 50000 Perspectives on Systems Engineers are frequently asked to solve problems as a team to achieve a goal. However, confusion arises when proponents of one perspective interact with others without a clear understanding of the variety of SE histories and tools. Each can play an important, complementary role in the development of a robust approach to SE and the role of humans in engineering systems. This course provides an introduction to, and references for, each of 4 distinct approaches to SE concepts tools.

SYS 51000 Tools and Methodologies for Designing Systems The purpose of the course is to emphasize patterns of systems thinking, to introduce systems engineering processes and methods, to introduce theory for model-based systems engineering, and to provide practice in using a model-based systems engineering tool.

SYS 53000 Practical Systems Thinking Engineers, social scientists, and managers frequently bring people and technology together to address complex problematic situations in an equitable way that benefits people and the environment. Multiple systems concepts and methods have been developed to address these situations, and typical courses in systems focus on a relatively small portion of the rich assortment of available approaches to addressing systems problems. This course introduces students to multiple systems concepts and methods via readings and class discussion. The students then apply these concepts and methods on team-based projects. The course will emphasize critical thinking how the concepts and methods are applicable to the problematic situations of the projects and how well the project teams were able to perform the required activities.

Students seeking a full graduate degree can complete the Graduate Certificate in Systems in addition to their graduate coursework, but they must apply for the Graduate Certificate in Systems separate from the full graduate degree.

Non-degree seeking students can also enroll in the certificate program.

In the program details sections, choose Systems as the selected graduate major and Systems Graduate Certificate for the Degree Objective.

Tuition is charged at a flat rate per course, which varies depending on whether you're a resident of Indiana. Your expected cost of attendance for Purdue Online College of Engineering will also include certain non-refundable fees.
