This six-course certificate includes spiritual enrichment opportunities for those looking to further their academic or personal development. Certificate students are eligible for STM’s tuition scholarships. This advanced certificate is offered only in the summers and is completed over three summers. This certificate enables persons who are personally or professionally interested in the study of Christian spirituality to delve into historical and contemporary Christian spiritual traditions, themes, and practices with an eye toward effective spiritual leadership today. This six-course certificate prepares persons to assume leadership in specifically Ignatian spiritual formation. This Certificate provides nurses, counselors, social workers, and parish pastoral care givers with an opportunity to explore the intersection of Spirituality Studies and Pastoral Care in ways that deepen their ministerial and faith based service. An Introduction to Spiritual Direction practicum is a required component of this Certificate. A fundamental premise of this Certificate Program in Pre-Theology Studies for Seminarians is that Catholic University has special and unique resources for educating seminarians according to the mind and spirit of the fifth edition of the Program of Priestly Formation and that seminarians who pursue the two year program outlined in the Program of Priestly Formation at Catholic University deserve to be honored and recognized for their pre-theology studies at this university. The certificate is a credential for and a recognition of studies conducted at The Catholic University of America. Description The Certificate in Interfaith Dialogue is designed for students who recognize that global peace and reconciliation is possible only when adherents of the world’s religions recognize their mutual dependence upon each other, learn to understand each other, and determine to work together to meet global challenges. The Certificate program helps students to frame an adequate theology of religions from within the Christian tradition that can serve as a foundation for dialogue and collaboration with persons of other faiths. Students must complete all requirements of both the Certificate in Spiritual Care program and the M.Div. degree in order to receive the Certificate in Spiritual Care. The Certificate in Spiritual Care is designed for students who are called to ministries of emotional support and spiritual guidance in a variety of settings, including congregations, public and private institutions, and community ministries. The Certificate offers two areas of focus. The Certificate requires nine credit hours of advanced elective coursework in pastoral theology and spirituality, a contextual ministry placement in the practice of pastoral care or spiritual formation, and a final written self-reflective paper or project. Personal Spiritual Direction or Counseling: Since competent and ethical practice of spiritual care necessitates self-reflection, personal growth, and attending to one’s own physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, students in the Certificate in Spiritual Care are expected to participate in activities geared toward their ongoing formation, growth, and well-being. Note: Completion of the Certificate in Spiritual Care does not in itself qualify graduates to become board-certified chaplains or certified spiritual directors.
