The Urban Education area of concentration is intended for experienced education professionals who seek advanced training for leadership positions, which might include curricular leadership roles, school district leadership, out-of-school learning organizations, university outreach/extension, and other areas where learning occurs within or strongly connected to the urban context. Our practice-oriented degree program trains professionals to lead, develop, implement, and evaluate informal learning experiences.

The College of Education offers course work which leads to the Doctor of Philosophy in Policy Studies in Urban Education with concentrations in (1) Educational Organization and Leadership and (2) Social Foundations of Education. Ph.D. in Education, Concentration in Urban Services Leadership. Doctoral students will utilize a multidisciplinary approach to develop a broad understanding of the critical issues and challenges in adult learning and subsequently apply that understanding to the planning, implementation and evaluation of adult learning and educational programs and initiatives. Our graduates have taken on roles in medical education, community service with non-profit organizations, school divisions, for profit organizations, government organizations, as well as in academia. Our multidisciplinary concentration allows students to focus on specific areas of interest in which adult learners will be involved.

The Ph.D. program in Urban Education offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of urban education situated within an analysis of broader social, political, and economic processes that shape schooling and learning. Our research-intensive program is committed to critical and interdisciplinary studies in urban education, with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism and social justice. The program prepares students with the necessary theoretical and methodological tools to understand urban education as part of other interconnected systems of urban life and to translate research findings into educational practice, policies, curricula, and political action. Our program integrates rigorous academic work and critical democratic engagement in the study of urban education.

Develop a realistic and functional philosophy of urban educational administration and leadership, combined with the skills needed to translate that philosophy into the effective operation of educational institutions .
