The Frost School of Music Vocal Performance is uniquely positioned to prepare doctoral students for the world of vocal pedagogy, vocal performance, and scholarly research. We are part of a large school of music that is innovative and embracing of both traditional and contemporary vocal arts. The degree is tailored for each student to build on strengths while addressing areas that need improvement. Students participate in doctoral course work that prepares them to move into a career as a performer-teacher in the field of vocal pedagogy and performance. The course work helps students build practical and extensive knowledge of repertoire for teaching, including English, French, German, Italian and Musical Theater. Additionally, the curriculum affords performance opportunities in opera and recital, arranges internships with master teachers in voice studios and speech pathologists and otolaryngologists' practices. Further the option of incorporating a cognate allows students acquire expertise in a related area, thus preparing them to successfully move forward in their careers.
An official transcript from ALL post-secondary schools attended, regardless of if a degree was granted or not, must be sent directly to the Frost School of Music from the issuing institution in order to be considered official.
Current University of Miami students applying to a new degree program must provide an official University of Miami transcript.

TOEFL IELTS Test scores are required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not received a degree from an accredited English-speaking institution. Additional information can be found under International Applicants.

The Frost School of Music is requiring international applicants to their programs to complete a course-by-course evaluation with GPA.
Applicants who are applying with a current degree in progress will be required to have their final transcripts and diploma evaluated upon arrival at the Frost School. If applicants use Josef Silny for the initial evaluation, the Frost School will cover the evaluation. If applicants choose a different vendor, they will be responsible for the cost of the re-evaluation.
Final acceptance to the Graduate program is made after all materials requested by the Frost School of Music have been received and evaluated. Admission decisions are sent out starting in late March.
Applications are accepted for only one degree program.
Graduate applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA for consideration.
Applicants must be in-progress toward completing or have earned the appropriate prior music degree(s) from a regionally accredited institution in order to apply for a graduate level music program. If you are accepted and decide to attend the Frost School, you will be required to provide a final transcript showing a conferred degree.
The MM in Music Business Entertainment Industries and the MA in Arts Presenting Live Entertainment Management do not require prior music degrees.

In addition to vocal technique, students learn foreign languages, vocal repertoire, and stagecraft in a supportive yet competitive atmosphere designed for individual artistic growth.
KU Opera presents two fully staged productions each year, one of which is in collaboration with the KU Theatre Department. Repertoire ranges from traditional to baroque, contemporary to operetta. Students are encouraged to audition for all productions, as well as the various musicals and choral concerts which take place throughout the year.
KU students regularly receive summer apprenticeships with opera companies including Santa Fe, Glimmerglass, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Central City, the Merola Opera Program, and the Chautauqua Festival as well as with festivals such as Tanglewood, Aspen, SongFest, and the Seagle Colony. In addition, KU graduate students have the opportunity for year-long apprenticeships with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, where they further develop their craft through advanced coaching and various performance opportunities.

Acceptance as a graduate student by the Departments of Music is required.
The applicant must have extensive performance and teaching experience after receiving a master degree from an accredited institution in vocal performance.
A public recital of a program of 60 minutes duration selected by the adviser from works on the applicant repertoire and professional experience record, to include works of contrasting styles and demonstrating proficiency in at least two languages in addition to English .
The applicant is responsible for the overall quality of the performance on all recitals required for the degree. Entrance recitals and placement and entrance examinations are given during the first and second semester registration periods. An interview with the committee takes place after the examinations are completed.
Based on the results of the entrance examinations, the adviser, in conference with the student, will arrange a program of study of 62 to 72 hours beyond the master degree. The courses to be completed as part of the degree requirements will be communicated to the student by the adviser. Each vocal performance major is expected to audition for all opera productions and actively participate as assigned by the vocal division. This may entail specific roles or participation in opera chorus as needed.
The program content of this recital will be communicated to the candidate 90 days in advance of the performance. To be prepared by the candidate without the aid of a teacher or coach, this recital should demonstrate high professional standards of performance.
A significant portion of the repertoire for applied instruction and of recital programs must consist of music by Latin American composers.
Three of those semester hours must be Research Methodology (MUS 731), unless the student has taken a similar course for the master degree. At the conclusion of coursework, the student will take a written, four-hour minor comprehensive examination (based on four musicology courses selected by the student).

The Doctor of Musical Arts in Pedagogy (Voice) at Shenandoah University is the only one of its kind, open to singers of all styles, with no classical music audition requirements. It is also the only program to offer both.
The Doctor of Musical Arts in Pedagogy (Voice) degree prepares students for academic and non-academic (alt-ac) careers in a world where cross-training is a necessity. Those interested in pursuing higher education careers will be prepared to teach, research and lead academic programs. Those interested in alt-ac careers will have the skills necessary to run highly successful private studios, non-profit organizations and or join a voice care team.
Students gain advanced knowledge through an interdisciplinary approach in areas of anatomy, physiology, technology and applied voice. Classical and contemporary commercial music voice techniques are incorporated throughout the curriculum to make sure you are ready to help any singer who enters your studio. Classes such as anatomy and physiology (including time in our state-of-the-art cadaver lab), voice disorders, body awareness, teaching practicum, technology in the studio, research design and two years of private voice lessons prepare students to be well-rounded practitioners who are ready to take on the challenges and opportunities facing singers in the 21st century.
When it is time to write your traditional or three article dissertation, you will have the opportunity to study the topic of your choice to set the course of your career as an expert in the field. Our D.M.A. students have embraced diverse dissertation topics including the the menopausal voice, laryngopharyngeal reflux, performance anxiety, contemporary Christian music, Gospel squall, formant tuning in baritone voices, voice training for music therapists, vocal function exercises for musical theatre singers, gender bias in vocal literature, temporomandibular joint disorders and the impact of voice lessons on patients with cystic fibrosis.
